Under the direction of the Executive Director and in harmony with the Christian nature and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA. The Youth Development Director will be directly responsible for administration and program management of school-age licensed childcare, summer camp and related programs. Provide visionary leadership in the development of new programs and maintain high standards of quality in all programs. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Division of Duties:

  • 80% supervision and management of After School, Teen Leaders and other Youth Development Director roles
  • 10% leadership to Annual Giving and other special projects
  • 10% association and family center meetings and/ or manager on duty assignments

Priorities:

  • Provides strong leadership and support for attaining association’s goals and objectives
  • Provides strong fiscal management in all areas of responsibility
  • Plans, develops and implements school-age child care, summer camp and related programs
  • Communicates the YMCA mission and objectives to the community
  • Assists and foster a strong Annual Campaign
  • Provides supervision and support to site directors by multi-faceted means. Including, but not limited to, weekly site director meetings, weekly engagement at individual programs, quarterly health and safety assessments and curriculum development
  • Ensures the safety and quality of day to day operations, including substitutes where needed, staff supervision, family interventions, school connections and business support
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with school officials: principals, custodial staff, support staff and key partners to gain support for above programs
  • Ensures implementation of a developmentally appropriate and multicultural curriculum fostering a progression of skills and social development in all children
  • Develops a weekly schedule for presence at designated sites to observe program, interactions, audit paperwork, address issues and support Site Directors
  • Responsible for promotion and increasing enrollment numbers in above mentioned programs
  • Regularly conducts both formal and informal program evaluations by capturing parent and child feedback
  • Responds to all parent, agency and community inquiries within 24 hours of receiving
  • Leads personal and professional development of directors and their staff members; articulation and clarification for sit directors regarding regulations, expectations, referrals and policies for families
  • Maintains administrative paperwork of participant files, staff lesson plans, program evaluations and licensing visit feedback
  • Responsible for being Family Center expert on state licensing requirements
  • Provides leadership for licensed summer camp program
  • Recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates all staff and volunteers in related programs. Conduct all staff trainings and meetings
  • Monitors the budget and exercises necessary controls to assure operations are carried out in a balanced fiscal position
  • Manages payroll and schedules of staff within the program area
  • Ensures safety, cleanliness and function of all facilities and equipment
  • Is good role model by promoting healthy living, social responsibility and youth development
  • Incorporates character development within the activities of each program
  • Plays major fundraising role in Annual Giving.
  • Maintains healthy and continual communication with supervisor
  • Assists in the leadership of family center special events
  • Other job duties as assigned by Executive Director
Educational Background: 
A bachelor's degree in a child-related field or equivalent
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 21 years or older
  • At least one year’s experience working with children in licensed child care
  • One year supervisory experience
  • Minimum two years programmatic experience as a coordinator or supervisor of child care programs
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to certify within 60 days of employment)
  • MAT (medication administration) certification (or ability to certify within 60 days of employment)
  • Adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills appropriate for interacting with both children and adults
  • Able to communicate and work effectively with groups of children and their parents
  • Clear Criminal Background Check, and CPS check and a negative TB test
  • Knowledge and maturity to observe children’s behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety practices and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
  • Ability to manage the daily administrative, program-related and supervisory responsibilities of the school-age child care program
  • Ability to articulate “best practice” in the field of School Age Child Care
  • Able to inspire teamwork with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. 
  • Participate in necessary workshops which will enhance his or her teaching
  • Fulfillment of state-specific hiring standards for licensed child care center director (at minimum), including continuing education/training hours
  • Completion of YMCA certifications as defined by YMCA of South Hampton Roads

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $34,111.00 - $40,000.00
