Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Youth and Family Programs Director is responsible for providing Cause-Driven management and operations to the departments of Before School Licensed Child Care Programming, Stay and Play, Izone, Family Programming, Arts & Humanities, Out of School Camps and Summer Day Camp. The Youth and Family Programs Director also assumes a leadership role in the annual support campaign. Day to day operations include staff supervision, fiscal control, program development, program area facility management/maintenance, marketing, and volunteer management. The Youth and Family Programs Director is also responsible for hiring, training and supervising and leading their staff team in superior levels of member service and engagement in accordance with the Association Gold Book Guidelines.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Division of Duties:

  • 70% supervision and management of Youth Development and Family Department
  • 20% association, family center meetings and/or leader on duty assignment
  • 10% leadership to Annual Giving and other special projects

Priorities:

  • Develop, implement, and grow youth and family programming
  • Provide leadership and support for branch management team, annual support campaign, and volunteer committees/boards as assigned
  • Ensure high quality programs through innovative program development, evaluations and ongoing training of staff

The Youth and Family Programs Director must understand and be willing to learn the necessary skills required for the successful completion of duties including:

Budget and Financial Performance

  • Provide strong fiscal management in all areas of responsibility
  • Assists with Child Care Open Doors applications and renewals and adheres to YMCA standards and policies

Program Development and Membership Engagement

  • Apply knowledge in planning age appropriate curriculum
  • Effectively plan and coordinate operation of full day child care including field trips, facility usage and program planning/scheduling
  • Assist in maintaining high quality standards adhering to or surpassing state licensing where applicable, and care and maintenance of program facility and equipment
  • Develop, cultivate and maintain positive relationships with school administrators, PTA groups, state licensing representatives and other outside agencies
  • Effectively coordinate facility usage for assigned programs and activities
  • Communicate effectively with all childcare staff, parents, school officials and community
  • Develop, produce and distribute program information necessary to promote assigned programs, in accordance with family center marketing plan
  • Expand current Youth Development offerings with high quality programming in accordance with the Association Gold Book guidelines

Team Performance Towards Organizational Goals

  • Hire, train, evaluate and supervise the Day Camp, IZone, Stay & Play, Arts & Humanities, and Before school staff
  • Recruits and trains program volunteers
  • Represent the Family Center on the following Cabinets: Teens, IZone, Stay & Play, Day Camp, Arts & Humanities, School-age Child Care
  • Effectively prepare staff schedules, manage employeepayroll
  • Effectively coordinate staffing for day camp, drop in care, arts, and before and after school; including managing of substitute staff

Fund Raising

  • Participates in successful annual support campaign. Active leadership required in staff giving and membership involvement

Professional Development

  • Maintains current CDL, CPR/AED/O2/First Aid and MAT certification
  • Attends trainings as required, including YMCA New Staff Orientation, blood borne pathogens and child abuse prevention training
  • Attends mandatory staff meetings

Facility Management

  • Effectively coordinates facility usage for assigned programs and activities
  • Ensures upkeep of related facilities and equipment
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in a child related field or Sports Management/ Recreation/Health Sciences is preferred, or 48 semesters or 72 quarter hours of college credit of which 12 semesters or 18 quarter hours are in subjects relating to children
Skills/Experience: 

The Youth and Family Programs Experience Director will meet the qualifications set forth by the YMCA of South Hampton Roads. Staff shall be of good character and reputation; capable of carrying out assigned responsibilities; capable of accepting training and supervision; and capable of communicating effectively both orally and in writing as applicable to the job responsibility.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • At least 21 years or older
  • 1 to 2 years supervisory experience
  • Must be able to attain CDL (commercial driver’s license) Class B with Passenger Endorsement within 6 months of hire, Air Breaks preferred
  • Available to work days, nights and weekends
  • Proficient computer skills

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Candidate must possess sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities.
  • Will be required to walk, stand, kneel, stoop, push, and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Physically able to successfully complete required certifications
  • While performing duties the employee may occasionally work in the outside weather conditions, and is exposed to wet, cold and /or humid conditions
  • Continuous operations requiring attention to detail and multi-tasking
  • Will be exposed to cleaning supplies
  • Must be able to perform the duties of those they supervise
  • Flexibility with work schedule is necessary; evening, weekend and holiday shifts may be required for coverage
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $35,357.00 - $40,000.00
