The board has determined that its new CEO should be an experienced leader who has the background and qualities that will permit him or her to achieve excellence in the following roles:
- Develop and implement a strategic plan
- Advocate the vision of the YMCA and be the heart and soul of the operation
- Fiscal management
- Cause-driven leadership
- Build and manage the staff team
Areas of Responsibility:
- Develop and implement a strategic plan: Have the ability to work effectively with volunteers and key staff to create and develop a strategic roadmap that addresses the needs of this YMCA with defined organizational strategies. Lead staff in the successful development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. Lead volunteers in aligning committees and their charters of work to support the strategies and goals of the Association.

- Advocate the vision of the YMCA and be the heart and soul of the operation:Actively interact and communicate with YMCA members, donors, staff and volunteers and be seen as an active and integral member of the community. Act as an ambassador for the mission, cause and vision for the YMCA within the community and be seen and respected as a leader with the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders while always upholding the highest standards of the values of the YMCA’s heritage.
- Key competencies: collaboration with the YMCA staff, Board and community, clear and concise communication, excellent and enduring relationships, appropriate influence, developing and mentoring others, and high self-awareness
- Fiscal management: Ensures the Association’s financial resources are properly managed and effectively report the organization’s financial position to all relevant stakeholders. Use high level of financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth and stability while consistently leading organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue, and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders to lead their departments to successful financial operation. Develop and implement stewardship strategies.

- Cause-driven leadership: Inspires and mobilizes staff, volunteers, members, community members and community partners to strengthen communities. Passionate about giving their community a place to play, to learn, to be healthy, to eat well and give back. Creates a welcoming, genuine, hopeful, nurturing environment dedicated to making their community stronger.
- Key competencies: values, community, volunteerism, inclusion, relationships, developing others, emotionally intelligent and mature, managerial courage
- Build and manage the staff team: Ensures that a talent management system is in place and executes effectively. The system will ensure the YMCA has an outstanding, dedicated, and competent staff. Establish an individual development plan for each direct report. Hire, motivate, nurture, retain, and hold staff accountable for key objectives. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie and sense of mission/purpose. Create a learning organization.
- Key competencies: quality results, relationship, influence, community, communication, developing and mentoring others, change management, values, succession planning at all leadership levels, able to stabilize workforce
Skills/Experience:
- Accredited 4-year college degree; Master’s Degree preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
- Minimum ten years of prior experience in executive management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees and multiple sites.
- Successful track record of strategic plan implementation.
- A clear vision of how to serve “all” of the community.
Preferred Candidate Criteria:
- YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (Note: Candidates not already in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain via YMCA of the USA).
- A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management in excess of $10M or more annually.
- Proven experience in developing and executing a strategic vision.
- Successful history of philanthropy and building of long term strategic relationships. Fundraising experience in annual campaigns, capital efforts, endowment and grants.
- Strong operational skills and experience.
Compensation/Benefits:
Salary Range: Commensurate with accomplishments and experience.
Residency Expectation: Living in the YMCA of South Hampton Roads service area is required.
