We are seeking a founding Deputy Executive Director (DED) to establish Teach For America in Chattanooga and maximize our impact within the community in the next decade. As the DED, you will:
- Lay the foundation for a successful new operation in Chattanooga that maximizes the impact and leadership of hundreds of corps members and alumni in coming years
- Set a vision to pursue educational equity that is grounded in Chattanooga’s history, as well as its current opportunities and challenges
- Hire, develop, and manage a high-performing team of coaches who develop our corps members
- Create a core values-driven culture of innovation and impact across staff, corps members, and alumni
- Cultivate key relationships across Hamilton County, including the HCDE leadership and board, school leaders, the philanthropic community, local lawmakers, media, and other local partners
- Inspire and motivate the Chattanooga community to direct resources to the growth and sustainability of TFA
- Serve as a member of the senior leadership team, collaborate with the full regional team across Nashville and Chattanooga, and report to the Executive Director
If you are successful, in 5 years, over 100 TFA corps members and alumni will have taught and led thousands of HCDE’s most disadvantaged students. These students, who have incredible potential, will have a greater chance to pursue and fulfill their dreams due to your leadership.
Areas of Responsibility:
The DED will be responsible for, but not limited to:
- Serve as a savvy relationship-builder by leading in a way that quickly and authentically builds trust, credibility, and a spirit of collaboration with key stakeholders in Chattanooga.
- Chart the course for TFA’s work in Chattanooga by deeply learning Chattanooga’s education landscape and setting the vision and plan for entering Chattanooga that is grounded in the landscape’s history, opportunities, and challenges.
- Influence others to achieve outcomes in service of this vision by seeking, listening to, and discerning diverse perspectives; acquiring firsthand community experience to deepen insights and approaches; navigating and leveraging structures and relationships to gain support; and demonstrating knowledge of political and policy landscapes.
- Provide cultural and enterprise leadership to TFA as a whole by serving as a member of the Leadership Team, building and maintaining a culture that is grounded in our core values, exemplifying our core values in all actions with all internal and external constituents, and creating an environment that fosters diversity and inclusiveness.
- Provide executive management to Chattanooga’s team of 15 corps members (beginning in the summer of 2019), and 1-3 additional staff members. As executive manager, attracting, hiring, and developing a team of diverse and talented staff members and managing the staff and corps members to reach ambitious goals.
- Develop and manage a sustainable funding plan that is responsive to and embraced by Chattanooga funders and provides a path forward for stabilization and continued growth in Chattanooga.
Educational Background:
Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university
Skills/Experience:
- Experienced, entrepreneurial, externally savvy leader with 7+ years’ work experience in the education or social change sector
- Experience leading a program, setting vision, and strong orientation to strategic planning
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and an ability and desire to develop and maintain deep relationships with variety of diverse constituents and institutions
- Exceptional people manager and culture builder
- Excellent strategic thinking skills to understand and lead in a complex environment
- Strong, proactive communicator and exceptional, humble listener
- TFA Alumni and knowledge of Chattanooga preferred

Work Demands
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends
- Ability to travel within Chattanooga frequently and ability to travel Nashville 6-8 times a year
