Peer Support Specialist/Criminal Justice Liason

Provides one to one peer mentoring with and group peer support to individuals who experience mental health and/or substance abuse challenges. The Peer Support Specialist will provide highly individualized supports to program recipients which may include offering guidance, Recovery Role Modeling, individual advocacy, systems advocacy and other support services.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Ability to interface with peers, colleagues, service providers, family members and community members in an empathetic, professional manner.
  • Facilitating and/or co-facilitating small and large group presentations on mental health topics, including sharing personal journey of recovery.
  • Ability to establish a rapport with people of various cultural and/or economic backgrounds.
  • Coordinate and/or provide Peer Service activities including, but not limited to:  establish individualized recovery plans, provide supports in the community as well as at recovery education programs, facilitate recovery classes as scheduled, outreach to potential peers and community.
  • Involvement in a variety of projects as assigned but not limited to:  marketing efforts, curriculum development, outreach to potential peer staff and peer service recipients, and additional program development activities as assigned.
  • Attend local and statewide trainings and additional trainings as required. 
  • Actively participate in staff meetings, supervision sessions, and peer support for peer supporters, and team/group activities.
  • Possess understanding, belief and commitment to the recovery process.
  • Belief in the recovery potential of all people with MH/SA challenges and committed to the philosophy of peer support. 
  • Ability to represent the agency with a high level of professionalism within the community and workplace.
  • Complete all peer paperwork in a timely manner and keep peer files organized and up-to-date.
  • All other duties as assigned by CEO or Executive Team.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Personal history of recovery
  • Knowledge of trauma informed care, theories, principles and practices
  • Ability to manage time, complete tasks accordingly.
  • Must possess good communication skills both orally and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including active and reflective listening skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and possess the ability to work independently or within a team.
  • Effective conflict resolution skills
  • Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentation software.
  • Current NC Certified Peer Support Specialist
  • Valid NC Drivers License 
  • Knowledge and familiarity in working within the court and legal systems
