The Assistant Aquatics Director is an aquatics professional who is responsible for the operation and safety of two year round aquatics facilities at the Chapel Hill – Carrboro YMCA and the Y at Meadowmont.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Recruit, hire, train, coach and evaluate Head Lifeguards (HL) and Lifeguard staff. Provide additional support with program staff and leadership staff.
- Manages all scheduling of HG and Lifeguards according to program needs for two year round aquatic facilities.
- Leads all aquatic operations, as the Certified Pool Operator for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Y at Meadowmont locations including chemical inventory, performing or recommending maintenance and repair of pool mechanical equipment, record keeping, following county and state guidelines required for permit and inspections.
- Oversees Lifeguard Certification programs and trainers.
- Acts as the Director in Charge of the Y at Meadowmont during summer operating season.
- Collaborates with and supports Youth and Membership programs including providing aquatic safety training to key non-aquatic staff as needed.
- Help ensure compliance with YUSA and Association Program Guidelines. Conduct regular rescue ready audits as part of ongoing risk management.
- Prevent, prepare for, and respond to incidents in and around the pool area.
- Exact adherence to standards of safe and courteous conduct among staff.
- Work in direct service roles as lifeguard, swim instructor as needed.
- Directs Lifeguard In-Service and Safety Trainings.
- Ambassador for the YMCA Mission and lead by example to staff and members.
- Make responsible decisions within the scope of prudent and best practices in Aquatics.
- Model the Association Image Guidelines by being professionally attired and groomed.
- Report any concerns with staff to the Director of Aquatics.
- Maintain positive public relations. Know and be able to interpret the aquatic policies and programs of the YMCA of the Triangle Area, Inc. and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA
- Follow and implement established Emergency Action Plans (EAP) for emergencies. Complete Incident Report and submit it to the Aquatic Director immediately.
- Maintain all required certifications.
- Actively participate in Annual Campaign Teams as assigned.

Educational Background:
A two-year post-secondary education or a baccalaureate undergraduate degree is preferred.
Skills/Experience:
- Strong communication, organizational and leadership skills
- Lifeguarding (YMCA or Red Cross), CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Standard First Aid, AED, and Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer required
- Instructor certifications in Lifeguard Training (YMCA and/or Red Cross) and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Standard First Aid, AED, and Oxygen Administration are preferred.
- Hold current certifications in pool operations to meet Orange County and North Carolina Health codes. NSPF, CPO and or NRPA AFO.
- 12 months lifeguard experience
