As a member of Audubon’s Atlantic Flyway State Program team, the Finance Associate will act as the business partner for three senior leaders in North Carolina, South Carolina and Vermont. Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), s/he is responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and maintaining the financial and administration functions of these three priority states whose annual operating budgets total $1.4M, $1.6M, and $635K, respectively. 

The successful candidate will have an excellent grasp of financial and accounting concepts, and is able to communicate financial information clearly and concisely. He or she will thrive in a fast-paced environment and is able to juggle multiple projects with a positive attitude. The position requires sophisticated financial systems skills (especially budgeting systems) and the ability to create and analyze budget and variance reports. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assists EDs and their Program Directors in preparing and managing the annual operating and capital budgets for Audubon North Carolina, Audubon South Carolina and Audubon Vermont, including oversight of multiple budget centers.
  • Monitors budget centers and overall state budgets to ensure compliance with the financial policies and practices of the National Audubon Society (NAS) and sound financial management of Audubon North Carolina, Audubon South Carolina and Audubon Vermont.
  • Acts as a liaison with NAS related to finance and administrative functions.
  • Maintains effective, timely and accurate financial controls and accounting systems; continually consults with relevant staff to review budget issues and variances.
  • Manages timely payment of all bills and invoices by verifying and completing payable and receivable transactions from Audubon North Carolina, Audubon South Carolina and Audubon Vermont.
  • Coordinates month-end and year-end financial closings, and prepares timely and accurate financial reports.
  • Reconciles Audubon North Carolina, Audubon South Carolina and Audubon Vermont revenue and expense records with NAS proprietary software to ensure accuracy.
  • Provides financial analysis, accounting, and reporting support for special projects requested by senior leaders.
  • Oversees and manages proper submission and approval of independent contractor agreements as well as other Audubon North Carolina, Audubon South Carolina and Audubon Vermont contracts and licensing throughout the state.
  • Executes financial tracking of federal and foundation grants in compliance with NAS and Federal Government grant policies and circulars; ensures that these, as well as other non-restricted funds are coded correctly according to Audubon’s account structure. 
  • Provides financial management training to Audubon North Carolina, Audubon South Carolina and Audubon Vermont staff.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of Audubon North Carolina, Audubon South Carolina and Audubon Vermont’s fixed assets throughout the states.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business, as well as 5 years’ professional budgeting/accounting experience in a nonprofit organization, working with diverse funding sources, including public funding, required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Must be well organized, have meticulous attention to detail, and excellent oral and written communication, presentation and management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced, decentralized work environment.
  • Optimistic with strong interpersonal skills necessary in order to build and maintain positive working relationships with board members, Audubon staff, and the Executive Teams of multiple states.
  • Excellent creativity, problem solving, planning and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle an extensive and diverse workload while maintaining a good sense of humor and positive perspective.
  • Ability to travel across the region, on occasion, in order to work with NAS Finance and assigned state programs when needed.
  • Technically savvy, with advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and strong knowledge of other Microsoft Office programs.
  • Strong financial systems expertise, including both general ledger and budgeting systems; experience with Financial Edge or ABM a plus.
  • Interest, understanding, and commitment to conservation and passion for mission of National Audubon Society.
