The Aquatics Coordinator is a professional who is responsible for aquatics programs and safety of the Aquatic facility.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Responsible for ensuring quality swim lesson program delivery and striving for excellent program participant satisfaction following the YUSA and YMCA of the Triangle Program Guidelines.
  • Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, coaching and evaluating swim lesson staff.  Provide additional support with part time leadership staff (Head Lifeguards).
  • Schedules instructors for program needs for both the Chapel Hill-Carrboro and YMCA at Meadowmont locations.
  • Provide leadership with all aspects of community outreach and program delivery with Swim for Life.
  • Assist the Aquatics Director with representing the Y with various community safety groups and events (ie. Safe Kids, Community Days, etc)
  • Help represent the Aquatics Department with IQ team work.
  • Prepare and teach Lifeguard Training classes.
  • Prepare and teach ASHI classes.
  • Provide at least 10 hours per week of direct service either lifeguarding or teaching swim lessons.
  • Prevent, prepare for, and respond to incidents in and around the pool area.
  • Exact adherence to standards of safe and courteous conduct among staff.
  • Collaborate with and support Youth and Membership programs.  Be available to assist in additional department roles such as lifeguard, swim instructor and front-line host.
  • Follow Association provided Swim Lesson Instructor trainings, while conducting monthly in-services.  
  • Be an ambassador for the YMCA Mission and lead by example to staff and members.
  • Make responsible decisions within the scope of prudent and best practices in Aquatics.
  • Model the Association Image Guidelines by being professionally attired and groomed.
  • Assist with preparing lifeguard staff schedules. 
  • Report any concerns with staff to the Director of Aquatics.
  • Maintain positive public relations.  Know and be able to interpret the aquatic policies and programs of the YMCA of the Triangle Area, Inc. and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA
  • Communicate regularly and work closely with the Aquatics Director and/or Branch Leadership when program, facility, or staff issues arise.
  • Follow and practice established Emergency Action Plans (EAP) for emergencies.  Complete Incident Report and submit it to the Aquatic Director immediately.
  • Follow and practice all documentation and reporting practices established by the YMCA of the Triangle Area.
  • Actively participate in Annual Campaign by identifying and recruiting volunteers for assigned team.
  • Maintain all required certifications.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
A two-year post-secondary education or a baccalaureate undergraduate degree is preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Strong communication, organizational and leadership skills
  • Lifeguarding (YMCA or Red Cross), CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Standard First Aid, AED, and Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer required
  • Instructor certifications in Red Cross Lifeguard Training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Oxygen Administration are necessary. YMCA Lifeguard Instructor/ASHI Instructor preferred or to be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Hold or be able to obtain current certifications in pool operations to meet Orange County and North Carolina Health codes.  NSPF, CPO and or NRPA AFO.
  • 2 years of swim lesson delivery and lifeguard experience.
