The State YMCA of Michigan Board of Trustees is actively seeking a visionary leader who will lead the YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps forward and build upon past successes. This is an exceptional opportunity for a highly motivated and cause-driven professional to work closely with the State Y Board of Trustees, Camp Board of Directors and key camp stakeholders. The Camp Executive Director will provide guidance and leadership for both camps along with operational support for Camp Hayo-Went-Ha on Torch Lake. In addition, the CEO will give guidance and support to the Michigan Youth in Government program. The CEO will spend 90% of time leading Hayo-Went-Ha Camps and 10% supporting the Youth in Government program.
Candidates must have a solid business acumen, sound judgment, and exceptional leadership skills. In addition, they must have a proven track record that demonstrates an ability to successfully implement and promote the camp’s services and activities at multiple sites, assess the camp’s physical and program needs, develop new camp programs, raise funds through annual and capital campaigns, develop and manage a diverse staff, work with a YMCA board that focuses on strategic issues rather than operational issues and connect and build relationships among the camp’s alumni. Solid staff development and program management are critical areas for the new Camp Executive and to the YMCA’s success.

Be seen and respected as a leader, with the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, while always upholding the highest standards of our mission and core values.

- Build and Manage the Staff Team: Ensures that a talent management system is in place and executed effectively. The system will support an outstanding, dedicated, and competent staff team. Establish an individual development plan for each direct report. Hire, motivate, nurture, retain, and hold staff accountable for key objectives. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie and sense of mission/purpose. Create a learning organization which encourages all staff members to learn, grow and develop management skills.

- Improving Operating Performance and Budget Management: Implement and achieve a surplus budget, coordinate and manage the use of resources at both camp program sites and manage expenditures while increasing revenues. Annual surpluses are needed to build up reserve funds. Provide oversight to the Youth in Government program to ensure they are achieving their budget goals and following accepted business practices.

- Lead and Support a Culture of Philanthropy: Support the annual fundraising plan and endowment development through the engagement of camp families, volunteers, staff, and donors. Participate in the current capital campaign to achieve the dollar goal and completing planned projects.
- Key Competencies: Setting, pursuing & attaining GOALS; personal persuasion and charisma; skilled at ‘The Ask’ as well as closing the deal; networking; and drawing people into recognition and support of the Hayo-Went-Ha Camps unique ‘brand’ camping.
- Implement a Strategic Plan: Have the ability to work effectively with the Camp Board of Directors, volunteers and key staff to execute the strategic roadmap that addresses the needs of the Hayo-Went-Ha Camps with defined organizational strategies. Lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. Lead volunteers in aligning committees and their charts of work to support the strategies and goals of the association.

Effectively drive change, while respecting the heritage and culture of the camps, by leveraging resources and creating alignment to expand organization opportunities.

- Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
- Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA camp or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
- Have a proven ability to develop new programs, review and enhance existing programs.
Preferred Criteria for Candidates:
- YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. (If this is not currently possessed, the CEO is required to obtain this within 2 years of hire date.)
- Proven fiscally sound business management.
- Fundraising experience including annual campaigns and the securing of grants.
- A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management in excess of $1M or more annually.
Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000
