The Forest Data Technician works closely with other staff to research and gather conservation planning data.
The Forest Data Technician will assist in measuring forest vegetation and site conditions in North – Central Minnesota, primarily within the Chippewa National Forest and Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Landscape. They will focus on collecting baseline forest vegetation data with Riparian Emphasis Areas as well as pre-treatment data on sites to be managed using a variety of silvicultural techniques. The Forest Data Technician will work with Conservancy staff as well as work closely with Chippewa National Forest staff members. This position will be supervised by the Conservancy’s Forest Restoration Specialist. This is a full-time, short-term position working for 23 weeks from mid-April through mid-October of 2019.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Will enter and manage forest survey data using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and other GIS web applications
- Coordinate GIS-based survey data collection with TNC Staff and other conservation partners
- GIS-Based data processing and analysis
- Compiles data, resolves disparities and modifies processes to generate plans.
- May work with a small group of staff, interns or volunteers on a project basis.
- Will work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Experience with GIS software and data to create maps.
- Experience and familiarity with flora and fauna of Minnesota forested ecosystems.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Field experience related to natural resource management.
- Ability to interpret guidelines and evaluate information and adapt accordingly.
- Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment.
