The Australia Program has evolved to the point that the Country Director has delegated significant responsibility to a Deputy Director. The Deputy will be responsible for providing leadership, strategic oversight and operational support.  Reporting to the Country Director and collaborating with Asia-Pacific and global peers, the Deputy is empowered to manage the day to day overall business and operational functions of the program.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Deputy provides support to the Country Director by broadly handling a number of management issues and strategically important aspects of the Australia Program.  In this role, the individual directs and manages a significant segment of the Conservancy’s program and assures its capacity to effectively provide program resources.  They may focus their work in one or more areas of the Program, such as External Affairs, Finance & Operations, Marketing & Memberships etc., but they have responsibility beyond that for program management and success. They must cultivate cooperative working partnerships with the Country Director and other staff, Trustee Board, corporations, educational institutions, government and private agencies and other conservation partners.

The Deputy will be accountable for the delivery of TNC Australia’s three pillars of Organisational Effectiveness:

  • Creating Best Ways to Work: to ensure our organisational resources are deployed most efficiently and effectively

In addition, the Deputy will be accountable for the efficient execution of conservation programs in the Implementation and Scale-Up stages of the Conservation Innovation Pipeline.  They will also work closely with the Director of Conservation to advise on the design and implementation of conservation programs in the R&D stage of the pipeline.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Responsible for strategic planning, accountability and decision-making.
  • Overseas the execution of Australia Program’s Business Plan.
  • Assess needs and ensures the Australia Program’s objectives are met.
  • Represents the organisation at high level meetings and events.
  • Serves as a mentor, coach and guide to senior staff,
  • Decisions are made independently with little or no opportunity for management collaboration or oversight.  Work is checked through consultation and agreement with others rather than by directives of superiors.
  • Decisions may affect organization’s public image.  Errors in judgement could have wide scope and lasting effect.
  • Decision may have maximum financial and/or legal impact on the organization.
  • Ensures the programs commitments, financial standards and legal requirements are met.
  • Willingness to travel to organization-wide meetings and office sites (occasional).
  • Flexibility to work long hours during deadline periods.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years relevant experience, including working at a senior level.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience managing a multi-disciplinary team of professionals.
  • Experience negotiating complex, high profile or sensitive agreements. 
  • Experience in developing program-wide strategies and policies.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of staff and partners.
  • Written and verbal fluency in English and fluency in the predominant language of the operating unit if other than English (if required).
  • Superb communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience in representing organisations at high level meetings and events.
  • Extensive experience in strategy execution, in a managerial role for conservation, finance and accounting, administration, human resources, or operations functions.
  • Knowledge of non-profit funding streams, including government and philanthropic.

  • Advanced understanding of best practices in non-profit management;
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experiences are appreciated;
  • Excellent and demonstrated public relations, policy development, project management and diplomacy skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills to plan, organize, and manage resources for successful completion of projects.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong negotiator and collaborator who strengthens business relationships.
  • Strong time-management, multi- tasking and organizational skills.
  • Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth.
  • Experience in delegating responsibility and authority to staff and clearly defining expectations and keeping staff informed and expressing appreciation.
  • Experience conceiving, developing, and managing multiple projects and strategic goals; including significant responsibility for financial management of the program, including setting financial goals, analyzing results, and taking corrective actions.
  • Management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance of a multi-disciplinary team.
