Old Spokes Home is a bike shop and nonprofit with a mission of making bikes more accessible for our community. We are a retail and service operation with equity and justice at our core. As a young nonprofit with a strong financial foundation and a new permanent home, we’re moving into our next phase of growth and program development. We’re a small and nimble organization—you’ll work both hands-on and at the 30,000-foot level.

We’re seeking a passionate leader who is an emotionally intelligent supervisor; an entrepreneurial business manager who can successfully lead our team in profitable sales and services while supporting our nonprofit programs; and an energetic advocate for the diverse communities we serve.

Compensation, Hours, and Benefits

  • Pay range $65,000-$80,000 per year
  • Full time. Flexible hours, some remote work is possible. Occasional weekends and evenings required

We’re open year-round, with a busy season from mid-March through mid-October. Located in Burlington, Vermont, we have a staff of twelve and a budget of just over $1 million.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Organizational Leadership 

  • VISION AND MISSION. Ensure that OSH’s values, vision, and mission are built into the design and delivery of programs, sales, services, and communications. 
  • DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION. Work with the board and staff to develop and deliver on DEI initiatives and goals, using the Cycling Industry Pledge Guiding Principles: radicaladventureriders.com/guiding-principles
  • WORKPLACE CULTURE. Foster a healthy, positive, and inclusive workplace culture that energizes, engages, and supports staff and volunteers, and encourages collaboration and communication.
  • STAFF MANAGEMENT. Supervise and support our four department heads: Programs, Marketing & Communications, Services, and Retail Sales; as well as our Bookkeeper. 
  • STAFF ENGAGEMENT. Prepare for and lead bi-weekly all-staff meetings that effectively build the team, solve issues, and envision opportunities through collaborative decision-making.
  • PERFORMANCE TRACKING. Develop, monitor, and evolve key performance indicators (KPIs) for retail operations and all programs.
  • BALANCE MULTIPLE FUNDING STREAMS. Balance income across program fees, sales, services, and fundraising to ensure the financial health of the organization. Ensure grant commitments are appropriately scaled and funded. Clearly communicate financials to staff.
  • POLICIES. Lead ongoing organizational policy development and ensure policies are maintained and up to date.
  • EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS Actively build and maintain, along with staff and the Board, in building and maintaining relationships with community leaders, partners, businesses, government, not-for-profit organizations, and donors. 
  • Retail, Service, and Program Excellence
  • RETAIL. Lead a high-quality, profitable retail sales and service operation.
  • CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE. Work with retail, service, and program staff to ensure excellent service for all customers.
  • PROGRAMS. Manage and develop programs and services that further our mission.
  • PROGRAMMING. Expand programs, support events, and build cycling culture and visibility in the wider community. Continue to develop an inclusive shop culture that makes space for folks traditionally underrepresented in the cycling industry. 
  • OPERATIONAL and WORKFLOW EFFICIENCY. Lead and support staff in creating organizational systems for workflows, and ensure standard operating procedures (SOPs) are in place.
  • COACHING and REVIEWS provide effective and timely feedback and support to build skill and performance.

Fundraising, Marketing, and Public Relations 

  • DEVELOPMENT PLAN. Plan fundraising with the Marketing Department Head to include individual donations, major donors, grant writing, and events.
  • TRACKING AND REPORTING. Ensure progress and results are tracked and shared.
  • COMMUNICATE with and engage stakeholders and the community at large.
  • EVENTS. Participate in event planning, management, and execution.
  • Administration, Finances, and HR
  • BUDGETING AND FINANCIAL CONTROLS. Develop yearly budgets and long-range financial plans that address the needs of retail, programs, and staff; recommend operating and capital budgets to the board; provide financial reports; ensure that financial controls are in place, followed, and clearly communicated to board and staff.
  • HIRING. Lead new job definition, job advertising, interviews, and hiring (seasonal hiring is a significant part of our yearly cycle).
  • VENDOR RELATIONSHIPS. Oversee relationships with major vendors on the administrative side, including insurance agencies, employee benefits providers, and consultants.
  • INFRASTRUCTURE. Ensure that technology (from hardware to network to software), and building maintenance are tended to.

Board Engagement

  • SHARED WORK. Work with the board to develop organizational goals and strategies, create and evolve policies, and manage finances
  • FUNDRAISING and EVENTS Engage the board in fundraising and events, with a goal of 100% board participation
  • COMMUNICATE. Regularly inform the board of OSH’s financial status, operational developments, and news
  • COMMITTEES. Support board/staff connection and collaboration via committee work
  • MISSION, VISION, STRATEGY. Refresh the mission, vision, and organizational strategy every two to three years
Skills/Experience: 

Required Qualifications

  • Passion for bicycles and bicycling, in whatever form that takes for you
  • Successful experience as a manager over multiple years with increasing levels of responsibility 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in complex, fast-moving organizations
  • Proven fiscal manager
  • Proven nonprofit development/fundraising knowledge and experience
  • Software savvy: skilled user of google docs and sheets, ability to learn fundraising software (Little Green Light) and event management software (Classy), and strong Excel skills for managing budgets, data exports, and reporting
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and listening skills
  • An empathetic leader with the capacity to support staff in an HR role
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
Compensation/Benefits:
