A key leader on the team, the Teen Leadership & Equity Director will have responsibility for extensive teen programming at Camp Ernst.

An essential leader on the camp team, the Teen Leadership & Equity Program Director will have responsibility for the extensive teen programming at YMCA Camp Ernst. This newly enhanced position will focus especially on recruitment & retention of a diverse pipeline of summer staff members, and provide leadership to camp's inclusion & equity strategy at all levels. Summer camp responsibilities include directly supervising the specialty activity areas at camp including ropes course, waterfront & mountain biking. School year responsibilities include facilitating the Junior Board, supervising camper weekends & hosting rental groups. Seasonal housing provided, as employee is required to stay overnight on-site for majority of summer season.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Recruit, especially through non-traditional pipelines and with an equity lens, hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff, program participants, and volunteers to effectively operate programs of the department as budgeted and approved.
  • Support camp leaders in executing culturally aware and responsive leadership development; lead, evaluate, and influence the camp culture to ensure it is inclusive
  • Connect with participants, parents, staff, and other community leaders to identify how camp programs can better meet the needs and expectations of the community
  • Develop and implement an effective, inclusive training program for ropes course, waterfront, mountain biking, and other specialty activities.
  • Develop, manage and control department budgets related to the position and as assigned.
  • Provide staff leadership for annual fundraising campaign, camp advisory board, and primary leadership support to the Junior Board and Diversity, Inclusion & Global Engagement (DIG) committee.
  • Inspect and maintain the facilities and equipment within the department to ensure high standards of maintenance, cleanliness, and repair of equipment.
  • Plan, executive, evaluate and continually improves teen programs and activities including off-season weekend camps, rental groups and training weekend.
  • Available at all times during summer camp sessions and other camp programs to provide ongoing supervision/instruction throughout session, including residing on-site for the summer season, as well as some weekends throughout the year.
  • Ensure program standards are met and decisions promote health and safety of staff and campers. Maintains records and enforces all policies and procedures including American Camp Association (ACA) standards.
  • Lead trainings, in-services, and coaching for staff, as necessary, including leadership approached through cultural lenses.
  • Develop effective culturally responsive communication plan with teen program participants and parents. Evaluate current systems and practices for equity and adjust where necessary.
  • Oversee promotional and informational marketing plan for camp, ensuring a visual component of inclusion and adhering to Y Brand guidelines.
  • Assume all other responsibilities as deemed necessary or assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Should have successful experiences working with diverse communities, especially people of color, youth development, staff supervision, training, staff and volunteer development, and program development.
  • Ability to supervise and work with children, teens and parents, including overnight at camp.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, parents, volunteers, members, and the general public is essential. Good organizational and written/oral skills necessary.
  • Ability to handle & delegate multiple tasks by being a creative, motivated, self-starter with the skills to lead and motivate others.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $33,000.00 - $37,000.00
