The Freshwater Conservation Coordinator will be a key member of Europe teams, more specifically of the Southeast Europe Program, which is focused on protecting the outstanding freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems of southeastern Europe. While this is a key program for TNC, the freshwater component is reaching beyond the boundaries of Southeast Europe, having European significance.
This is full time position for a one-year long contract, with possible extension. Place of work is Brussels, Belgium.
The Freshwater Conservation Coordinator assists the program staff regarding the freshwater components of the Program with the view of contributing TNC’s engagement in broader freshwater policy setting, with the development and implementation of conservation business plans and strategies. The coordinator also develops key topical expertise in specific freshwater related issues that support these functions. In order to do this, the coordinator will undertake literature reviews (both science and policy), preparing summaries, conclusions and briefing notes. He/She will also help with preparing minutes, notes, reports and publications on freshwater related topics. He/She will engage in scoping exercises and policy reviews how the results of the program could be scaled up geographically as well as in the broader policy setting. The coordinator will participate in freshwater related meetings and start building a network around the topic in support TNC’s engagement in with the European freshwater agenda, through which also helping to grow the Southeast Program. He/She will also contribute and/or lead the work on issues related communication, fundraising and reporting inside and outside of TNC. The work might also include administrative tasks, such as travel arrangements, database management and administrative tasks. The work could include travels to the Western Balkans, as well as travel within Europe or the US.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Supervises no staff but may oversee and direct work of office volunteers or interns.
- Coordinates multiple tasks or projects in a timely manner and with attention to detail.
- May assist with program budget preparation and monitoring.
- Makes day to day decision as delegated by the supervisor.
- Manage deadlines, related budgets and implement/complete action tasks.
- Contributes to the production and delivery of strategic publications and reports.
- Provide support to administrative, marketing, and fundraising functions.
- Doing data and information research, compiling summaries
- Contributing to the Program’s presence in digital and social media
- Work in a complex, often ambiguous and dynamic environment.
- Willing and able to travel frequently internationally.
- Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
- Experience working in complex projects.
- Experience handling standard business communications.
- English language proficiency, written and spoken.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- 2-4 years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Education/background in freshwater ecology, related political sciences
- Experience in the European freshwater-related policy issues
- Ability to complete tasks independently within assigned time frames.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, with assignments sometimes coming from several sources and work independently, .
- Ability to coordinate project information from several sources to populate databases, create reports and produce manual files.
- Experience utilizing databases for data entry and report production preferred.
- Strong administrative skills including attention to detail and numerical ability.
- Ability to plan, administer and record results of work-team meetings and activities.
