The Senior Advisor Development Finance Institutions Europe (Senior Advisor DFIs) furthers the work of the TNC and its conservation partners through direct interaction and engagement with multilateral and bilateral finance institutions based in Europe. The position can be based in London, Brussels or Berlin. The Senior Advisor DFIs reports to the Regional Managing Director Europe.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Senior Advisor DFIs serves as the principle contact to selected multilateral and bilateral finance institutions based in Europe, including the EIB, EBRD, FMO, AFD and CDC, among others. He/she establishes TNC as a major conservation partner and plays the lead role in managing the public agencies and selected official relationships. S/he leads and cultivates the relationships across and within the institutions, staying abreast of their evolving conservation priorities to assist TNC regions and global strategy programs in advancing their partnerships and engagements that could include grants proposal development among others. S/he is responsible for developing a global engagement strategy for the entities, coordinating with global TNC staff involved in the relationship to implement the strategy and advance the relationship in ways that bring the highest value to TNC’s priorities. S/he identifies conservation policy and funding opportunities, evaluates the potential for strategic partnerships, understands and applies principles of engagement with public entities, and develops and implements strategies to influence public policy and public funding for conservation at a large scale, national, regional and/or global level.  

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Accountable for persuasively conveying the mission of TNC to diverse groups including government officials and others who are critical to TNC’s overall engagement with Development Finance Institutions.
  • Works in partnership with other organizations in a collaborative and consultative or advisory capacity.
  • Prepares and presents project proposals and negotiates with bilateral and multilateral agencies and/or the business and corporate sector, to achieve program goals.
  • Develops and implements multi-year fundraising strategies and goals.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.
  • Communicates professionally with a wide variety of people from different cultures.
  • Ensures compliance with TNC internal policies and external requirements.
  • Ensures that our engagements with DFIs complies with federal lobbying laws and regulations.
  • Effectively directs and or participates in complex negotiations.
  • Develops constructive and effective working relationships inside and outside TNC and keeps TNC staff apprised of interaction, issues and concerns and direct questions as appropriate.
  • May supervise administrative and/or professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of management-level experience in government relations, corporate sector, or equivalent combination of education/experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Track record of successfully engaging DFIs for funding and/or conservation outcomes
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Fluency in English. Work experience in Europe.
  • Direct experience working with partners and government agencies.
  • Project management experience including coordinating the work of other professionals inside and outside an organization.
  • Proven experience in strategy development and implementation.
  • Demonstrated relationship-building skills.
  • Experience negotiating complex high profile or sensitive agreements.
  • Proven written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience managing Client Management Tools and Database

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience from a European public funding agency and/or development bank
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Master’s degree appreciated
  • Excellent team player with experience working in multi-disciplinary groups, using influence and interpersonal skills, listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships with governments, corporations, partners, donors, volunteers, and all levels of staff.
  • Experience conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives.
