The Finance Manager develops, manages and implements highly specialized finance-related services and/or finance strategy that facilitates comprehension, adoption, and advancement of the organizations goals and objectives of The Nature Conservancy in Maine.

Areas of Responsibility: 

As a member of the Core Team led by the State Director, the Finance Manager will contribute to the overall leadership of the Maine Chapter including responsibility for the management, maintenance and reporting of all financial data related to the Chapter. They anticipate when and where financial strategies should be integrated into conservation and fundraising strategies to help determine how the organization can reach its conservation vision and participate in planning processes. They work collaboratively with the Core Team and program managers to develop and monitor the annual operating budget and recommend fiscally responsible actions. They provide oversight of accounts payable, funds received and receivable, and staff expense reimbursements. Duties are highly confidential and require broad and comprehensive knowledge of Conservancy’s policies.

Along with Maine Chapter staff, this position will work closely with Finance, Accounting, and Grants staff in other chapters, as well as within the Conservancy's Divisional and Worldwide (WO) offices.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Manages all Chapter finances including the development and implementation of annual budget and related processes. Involved in program planning by providing financial recommendations related to organizational planning, policy development, and implementation.
  • Works closely with the Board Finance Committee to prepare financial information for Board meetings and related meetings. Identifies and explains key variances and recommends corrective action. Presents budget and year end results to Board of Trustees annually.
  • Maintains Chapter’s financial reports, including all general ledger statements. Manages the Chapter’s project structure and submits journal entry requests, as needed. Oversees year-end closing of general ledger for Maine.
  • Works closely with the Office Manager to ensure all bills are correctly paid via the accounts payable system. Oversees funds received and receivable.
  • Manages and monitors Chapter finances to ensure budget accountability and compliance with donor intent and internal and external financial policies.
  • Manages and plans Chapter’s long-term capital needs.
  • Leads the multi-year budget process and monitors the Chapter’s financial position to ensure the Chapter’s long-term sustainability goals are being met.
  • Designs and prepares ad hoc financial reports as needed for Board and staff.
  • Reviews funding proposals, providing direct assistance with development of project budgets, proper financial tracking, and reporting. Prepares reports for program managers, as needed.
  • Acts as a strategic partner with the Director of Development, helping to align the organization’s needs with donors’ philanthropic priorities. Provides the Development team with high-level accounting analyses, budgeting assistance for proposals, and coordinates fundraising financial reporting.
  • Liaises with Grants Administrator and Chapter staff to ensure government grant and contract compliance.
  • Ensures programmatic commitments, Conservancy policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance. Provides orientation and training to staff and Trustees and ensure all users are properly recording and reporting financial activities.
  • May participate in complex negotiations.
  • Work is diversified and may not always fall under established practices and guidelines.
  • Decisions may have program-wide impact and may bind the organization financially or legally.
  • Works with and communicates with a wide range of people – the public, upper management, and partners including financial/legal advisors.Works in partnership with other in a collaborative or advisory role.
  • Work is performed in a typical office setting. Willingness to sometimes work long hours and travel, as required.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field and 4 years' related experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with accounting/financial issues and analysis.
  • Technical experience with spreadsheet programs, general ledger reports, and other financial management tools.
  • Experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects.
  • Experience with relational databases.
  • Experience implementing strategic program goals.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and/or multi-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Non-profit accounting and U.S. government grants accounting experience is preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of GAAP and understanding of fund accounting principles, practices and regulations.
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to present financial data succinctly and in an easy to understand manner (i.e. to non-accountants).
  • Experience in manipulating, analyzing and interpreting data. Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel. Technical command of spreadsheet programs, general ledger reports and other financial management tools. 
  • Experience using organizational and analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Technical expert on complex accounting/financial issues.
  • Ability to understand and ensure compliance and proper recordkeeping related to match and other complicated financial requirements.
  • Ability to gain cooperation from individuals or groups over whom there is no direct authority in order to accomplish program goals.
