General Function: The Operations Director is responsible for implementing the mission, vision, and values of the YMCA within the community in accordance with the association Strategic Plan. They will oversee the day-to-day operations and financial management of the Ralphola Taylor Community Center YMCA. This involves all aspects of facility management, building an outstanding staff, a strong member and community participation, and a targeted program portfolio, resulting in maintaining and growing the YMCA’s position as a key part of the local community. The Operations Director is responsible for implementing the branch operating plan, and preparing and monitoring the annual budget, including significant grant administration. They will assist the Vice President in developing an engaged Board of Managers and growing the Annual Campaign.

  • Positively represent the YMCA in accordance with the character values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility and maintain relationships with professional and community organizations and agencies in the branch service area.
  • Efficient day to day operations of the branch including all administrative functions, risk management/compliance plans, and facility upkeep.
  • Implement and continually evaluate all operational components of the YMCA’s Real-Time Strategic Plan as relates to the Ralphola Taylor Community Center YMCA.
  • Provide direct leadership and supervision to Ralphola Taylor Community Center Y staff team. This includes ongoing coaching to ensure achievement of goals.
  • Develop and implement programs in the areas of membership, Lighthouse, after school and summer programming, youth and teen development, life skills and conflict resolution, academic enrichment,  youth sports, volunteers, community involvement, rentals, and other revenue generating programs.
  • Develop and implement membership plans leading to a growing number of children, youth, and families served.
  • Ensure adequate supervision of all children and youth.  Serve as a positive, professional role model for all members, program participants, and families.
  • Supervise and maintain accurate records for all government and grant funded programs to ensure compliance.Ensure that the facility is safe, welcoming, bright, clean, and well maintained.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with facility owner, the City of Bridgeport, to facilitate short and long term capital improvement plans.
  • Cultivate and foster a positive image of the Ralphola Taylor Community Center YMCA in the community at large and with the Board of Education and its adjacent Dunbar school.
  • Lead community awareness campaigns.
  • Build and improve the staff team in accordance with the strategic and operating plan.
  • Achievement of a balanced budget inclusive of capital reserves, depreciation, and association support.
  • Assist the Vice President with strategic development of an engaged board of managers to ensure responsiveness to community needs and commensurate financial support.
  • Provide leadership to the staff team to ensure the development and implementation of operational and financial plans, with a special emphasis on program and volunteer growth.
  • Provide leadership and follow through on grant based projects to ensure proper deliverables.
  • Participate in activities, workshops, conferences, etc., that will enhance personal and professional growth.
  • Provide leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees/boards as assigned.  Develop and maintain effective working relationships within the community.
  • Prepare for and implement branch special events such as, but not limited to, YMCA Healthy Kids Day program.
  • All other duties assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree - Required
Skills/Experience: 
  • YMCA Experience - Preferred.
  • Three years of experience in which increased responsibilities were earned. (YMCA or non-profit leadership experience preferred)
  • Ability to target programming to unique needs of neighborhood children and youth, including life skills and conflict resolution.
  • Experience in addressing social service needs in an underserved community.
  • Proven success in implementing family and youth focused programming.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish - Preferred.
  • Must have proficient proven skills and successful experience in meeting targets related to program management, development, and community outreach.
  • Must have experience recruiting, training, supervising, and developing full-time, supervisory staff, part-time staff, and volunteers.
  • Proficiency in active listening skills: patience; ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing and to do so with a diverse population in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to prepare written proposals for funding, detailed schedules of activities, promotional pieces for a variety of audiences/media, and presentations for community groups as well as prepare and present training curriculum for staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, YMCA financial, membership, and payroll software systems, as well as web browsers and ability to readily adapt to funder tracking systems and procedures.
  • Significant business skills including experience managing successful budgets and all financial and administrative functions, including payroll, registration processing, and cash management associated with programs.
  • Experience managing operations.
  • Ability to successively interact with East End and East Side Bridgeport communities.
  • Ability to partner with city, government, and other non- profit agencies.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $51,200.00 - $56,500.00
