The Restoration Practitioner develops, manages and advances conservation projects, plans and methods, and restoration projects in Northeast Ohio with focus on the Cuyahoga River.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Restoration Practitioner provides technical leadership and support to Ohio TNC program in Northeast Ohio to plan and direct restoration and stewardship activities.  She/he addresses critical threats to natural systems and individual species, fosters cross-site learning among conservation community, and supplies Eco regional planning teams with information for site portfolios.  The Restoration Practitioner develops and implements conservation projects and implements a variety of strategies to secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities.  S/he coordinates community support, manages partner relationships, coordinates multiple projects, sets deadlines and manages completion.

The Restoration Practitioner will manage restoration projects in partnership with the Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) to improve habitat within the Cuyahoga River watershed. In addition, the Restoration Practitioner may advise on management of TNC preserves and projects in Northeast Ohio.  With CVNP, the Restoration Practitioner will identify, select and seek funding to implement restoration of degraded sites in the Cuyahoga River watershed, focusing within CVNP boundaries and in alignment with CVNP/TNC Cooperative Agreement.  Position is contingent upon funding with funding currently secured for 2 years.  It is anticipated that S/he will develop implementation projects that will provide additional funding to maintain capacity.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and judgment.
  • Supervises administrative and professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development.
  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within and managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and meeting fundraising targets.
  • Manages restoration contracts, Request for Proposals, and construction oversight.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with ecological land management and restoration principles.
  • Experience managing staff or volunteers.  
  • Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., media, government officials, internal scientists.
  • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
  • Experience in invasives management, wetland delineations, stream assessments, and restoration design.                   
  • Must have valid driver's license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years’ experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
  • Ability to complete invasive species evaluations, vegetation monitoring, invasive management planning, and prepare scopes of work for stream and wetland restoration.
  • Experience with grant writing for project implementation.
  • Experience with contract preparation, contractor oversight, and contract and budget management.  
  • Successful experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects, including ability to create and follow timelines and deliver products and results in a timely fashion
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation and land management.
  • Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
