The Indigenous Lands Management Specialist develops, manages and advances conservation programs, plans and methods for Indigenous Territories in the Amazon Basin and other macro regions in Brazil.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Indigenous Lands Management Specialist provides technical leadership and support to TNC Brazil Program by planning, directing and implementing preserve management programs and stewardship with Indigenous People.  They address critical threats to natural systems and individual species, fosters cross-site learning among an international conservation community, and supplies conservation planning teams (formerly called “eco regional” planning teams) with site or landscape level information relevant to the planning process. They develop and implement conservation strategies, employ a full range of protection tools to acquire varying degrees of legal interest in land and implements a variety of strategies to secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities.  They coordinate programs and projects to protect indigenous territories.The Indigenous Lands Management Specialist will support the development and implementation of Territorial and Environmental Management Plans of Indigenous Lands (PGTAs) in the principles and procedures established by Environmental National Policy for Indigenous territorial and Environmental management of Indigenous Lands (PNGATI) and methodologies developed by TNC and indigenous partners. Also (i) will support implementation of the PGTAs in partnership with governments agencies, TNC, and local indigenous organizations in the elaboration of agenda and reports of meetings, expeditions and exchanges; (ii) will support sustainable economic development activities identified in indigenous Environmental Management Plans and measure their social, economic and environmental impacts (iii) assist in the development or improvement of government policies and regulation related to PNGATI, business and human rights;  

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Manage multi-disciplinary administrative and professional staff, with responsibility for performance management, training and career development. 
  • Gain cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.        
  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.           
  • Under minimal supervision, makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS, law or business degree and related experience in indigenous territorial and environmental management, natural resource management or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with sustainable economic development activities with indigenous and local communities.
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements. 
  • Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.  
  • Experience in partnership development (partners, community, government, etc.). 
  • Experience managing staff. 
  • Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in Portuguese and English
  • Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Browsers.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated
  • Knowledge of land management conservation practice and conservation science.
  • Knowledge of measure social, economic and environmental impacts  of the projects with  communities
  • Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, Indigenous land management, and natural resource preservation.
  • Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Experience with certain aspects of fundraising: identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation.
