Under the direction of Senior Aquatics Director, the Aquatics Director helps develop, organize and implement high quality member-focused YMCA aquatics programs.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Willingness and ability to develop leadership competencies in helping administrate aquatic programs, staff and volunteers.
  • A warm, friendly caring enthusiastic, cause-driven leadership style paired with excellent knowledge and skills in the area of aquatics.
  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet YMCA objectives. Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Strong sense of responsibility for the safety of members in the pool and pool area demonstrated by the enforcing of policies and procedures courteously and professionally, meeting all Association safety standards, and conducting rigorous in-service staff training and drills.
  • Hires, Trains, and supervises staff and volunteers in assigned areas. Facilitates communication and provides leadership; models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  • Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of pool equipment and chemical systems and troubleshooting techniques. Ensures proper maintenance of pools. Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  • Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings. Ensures that the current certificates are on file at all times for oneself and the entire Aquatics staff team, along with consistent adherence to branch and department Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
  • Creates and schedules swim classes, water fitness classes, and swim team practices and meets.
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Willingness and drive to assist in building relationships with community groups in an effort to develop and grow collaborations and partnerships.
  • Together with supervisor, develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn volunteer development for programs and in support of the Annual Campaign.
  • High customer/member service standards. Commitment to set an excellent example of healthy living, member engagement, youth development and community involvement. Responds to member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Assists with Program Committee meetings, as requested.
  • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs.
  • Recognize and understand the “zero tolerance” policy as it applies to member safety in and around the pool area. Infractions of this job description which significantly compromise member safety will result in immediate termination.
  • Accountable for pool First Aid kits being properly stocked and Olean branch medical supplies inventory.
  • This job description may not be all-inclusive and duties may be modified when deemed appropriate by the CEO. Employees are expected to perform all other duties as assigned and directed by the CEO.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in aquatics field with at least two (2) years of supervision experience preferred. 
  • Demonstrates knowledge in the field of aquatics and current certifications are required; YMCA experience preferred but not required.
  • Certifications:
    • Lifeguarding/FA/CPR for the Professional Rescuer & AED
    • Basic First Aid certification
    • Current YMCA lifeguarding or American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific and trainer certifications: Certified Lifeguard, Certified Swim Instructor.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills. Ability to speak distinctly, to communicate with customers and staff on the phone or in person.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $33,000.00 - $38,000.00
