World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a Senior Science Specialist, for Northern Great Plains (NGP). The Senior Science Specialist develops, prioritizes and manages the science priorities for the NGP Program and oversees measuring progress toward program goals Implements projects to answer key scientific questions throughout the ecoregion and communicates results to a wide variety of stakeholders. Completes and periodically updates the NGP Strategic Plan and landscape-specific plans, based on the latest science and rates of progress toward programmatic goals. Assists with fundraising proposals and initiatives. Supervises two specialist-level staff members.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Lead the development of science priorities for the Northern Great Plains Program. Incorporate input from internal and external stakeholders on prioritizing science needs in the region.
- Develop a plan for implementing scientific research to answer key questions throughout the ecoregion, including a budget, timeline, key partners and collaborators and expected results.
- Communicate both science priorities and results of scientific research to a regional and national audience through conferences, meetings and as a member of regional technical committees.
- Ensure that scientific research is incorporated into implementation plans for restoration, sustainable ranching, tribal and federal lands programs.
- Feed results of program strategies into science priority-setting activities.
- Develop monitoring programs to measure progress toward goals set forth in NGP and program strategies, incorporating the latest science in their design.
- Work with the WWF Network Science Program to develop collaborative projects and promote information sharing between the programs.
- In coordination with the Director of Conservation Programs and the Managing Director, develop proposals and assist in outreach to prospective funders.
- Manage 2 staff members of the NGP science team, as well as various consultants and contractors.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Educational Background:
Graduate degree is required, preferably in one of the following fields: Biology, Conservation Biology, Zoology, Ecology, or Wildlife Management
Skills/Experience:
- Must have 5 years of experience, preferably in field research, monitoring, management or conservation of biodiversity.
- Knowledge of Northern Great Plains ecoregion preferred
- Professional experience in landscape ecology, natural resource management and conservation biology.
- Preference will be given to candidates that have a record of professional publications, such as scientific journal articles, on which they are an author
- The person in this role will be supervising 2 staff members, so previous management experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience managing external consultants/contractors.
- Ability to think strategically and to incorporate input from a variety of stakeholders, collaborators and fellow staff members.
- Ability to work independently, as well as with a team.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both one-on-one and in a group setting.
- Ability to take initiative and facilitate the work of others.
- Must be willing to travel within the US, and internationally as needed.
