The Chattahoochee Fall Line Burn Fire Management Technician (CFL-FMT) participates in wild land fire operations which include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, and other tasks as assigned focused on the ecological management and restoration of habitat for rare fire adapted species such as red-cockaded woodpecker, gopher tortoise, and carnivorous pitcherplants.
The Fire Management Technician will participate on a seasonal prescribed burn crew that will be used to conduct prescribed burns primarily in central-western Georgia. The team will work in other areas of Georgia and potentially in Alabama preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, post-burn monitoring and other tasks. As part of the incumbent’s ongoing professional development, he/she will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials. In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in wild land fire suppression activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state and federal agencies, either as a TNC employee, or as a volunteer or short-term employee of the partner entity (such as an administratively determined, short term federal employee). The technician will assist with project work and other preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire including, but not limited to, trail maintenance, planting native plants, and invasive species removal/control. S/he will be based on TNC-owned property in the Marion County, Georgia area. To maximize the effectiveness of the crew and to provide a general security presence for TNC’s equipment, each crew member must live on site with the other Fire Management Technicians and Crew Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
- Will perform other preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.
- Works in a high stress team environment.
- Works under close supervision while expected to take initiative and personal responsibility.
- Ability to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Must be qualified as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2. - Must achieve physical fitness standard as determined by local Fire Program Manager and the TNC Fire Manual; Must be able to walk 3 miles in less than 45 minutes carrying 45 lbs.
- Experience operating various types of equipment.
- Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, and driver’s license).
- Must have driver’s license with clean driving record.
- Willingness and desire to travel from home base for several days, potentially weeks, at a time.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and multicultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- >1 year of related experience.
- Able to operate standard transmission vehicles and comfortable pulling equipment trailers.
- Ability and willingness to follow instructions from colleagues.
- $15.60/hour.
- Housing in Marion County with basic utilities will be provided at no cost to the employee upon signing and agreeing to lease terms, and the employee must live in provided housing with the other Burn Crew Members and/or Burn Crew Manager to maximize the effectiveness of the crew and to provide a general security presence for TNC’s equipment.
