The Camp Manito-Wish YMCA Board of Directors (“Board”) is actively seeking a visionary leader who will lead Camp Manito-Wish forward and build upon past successes. This is an exceptional opportunity for a highly motivated and cause-driven professional to work closely with the Board of Directors and key camp stakeholders. The CEO will provide guidance and leadership for the fundraising, outreach and operational. Camp Manito-Wish is a life changing experience and those who have participated in camp or serve others though camp would be preferred candidates.

Candidates must have solid business acumen, sound judgment, willingness to listen to the needs of the participants and staff, risk management for wilderness outpost (program) and exceptional leadership skills. In addition, they must have a proven track record that demonstrates an ability to successfully implement and promote the camp’s services and activities at multiple sites, assess the Camp Manito-Wish’s physical and program needs, develop new camp programs, raise funds through annual and capital campaigns, develop and manage a diverse staff, work with a YMCA board that focuses on strategic issues rather than operational issues and connect and build relationships among the camp’s alumni. Solid staff development and program management are critical areas for the new Chief Executive Officer.

Within the first year the new Chief Executive Officer must have a plan to have full enrollment in campers with full staffing needs with a focus on development of counselor and leadership staff, be aware of what the campers (& parents) need out of camping and create programs that will address those needs and hire and train sufficient staff to deliver upon those programs. Have an understanding to the mission and culture of camp if Chief Executive Officer has not experienced the Camp Manito-Wish extended experience. Create a strong relationship with the leadership team at camp so delivery of program and services are seamless. Have a new strategic plan in place moving forward that will address the needs and be able to implement those key deliverables and objectives, the current strategic plan was from 2014 – 2018.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The board believes its new Chief Executive Officer should be an experienced leader who has the background and qualities that will permit him or her to achieve excellence in the following roles:

  • Build and Manage the Staff Team: Ensures that a talent management system is in place and executed effectively. The system will support an outstanding, dedicated, and competent staff team. Establish an individual development plan for each direct report. Hire, motivate, nurture, retain, and hold staff accountable for key objectives. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie and sense of mission/purpose. Create a learning organization which encourages all staff members to learn, grow and develop management skills.
    • Key competencies sought include: Team building, talent motivation, inspiring creativity & resourcefulness, and enriching camp culture.
  • Maintain/Establish a Culture: Strengthen a culture of inclusion, engagement, character, ownership and life-long learning within the organization that reinforces, encourages, and promotes values of honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, and empowering others to succeed.  Effectively drive change, while respecting the heritage and culture of the camp, by leveraging resources and creating alignment to expand organization opportunities.
    • Key competencies sought include: Customer focused, establish and maintain high standards, consensus-building, self-confidence, excellent communication skills, and strong business skills.
  • Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: The ability to work effectively with Board, volunteers, leaders and key staff to identify critical community needs and develop a strategic roadmap focused on organizational strategies. Lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. Lead volunteers in aligning committees and their charters of work to support the strategies and goals of the Y.
    • Key competencies sought include: Influence, values, relationships, inclusion, communication, project management, innovation, decision making, quality results.
Educational Background: 
Accredited 4-year college degree (required; non-negotiable).
Skills/Experience: 
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  • Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA camp or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
  • Have a proven ability to develop new programs, review and enhance existing programs.

Preferred Candidate Criteria:

  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (Note: Candidates not already in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain via YMCA of the USA).
  • Fundraising experience including annual campaigns and the securing of grants.
  • A proven track record of budgetary and fiscally sound business management.
  • Experienced in camping services specifically long outpost trips (trail).
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary Range: $120,000 - $155,000 annualized commensurate with experience 

Residency Expectation:  Living in the Camp Manito-Wish’s Boulder Junction, Wisconsin is required, there is no housing available onsite.
