The Land and Water Conservation Coordinator performs and participates in land protection and management including, but not limited to preserve and conservation easement monitoring, ecological monitoring, facilities maintenance, database management, administrative support and outreach. A primary function will be to supervise a group of seasonal staff to conduct stewardship activities. This is a two-year term position based in Boulder, Colorado. Significant travel is required during the field season (2-5 days per week, April – October) to properties located across Colorado.
The Land and Water Conservation Coordinator will be responsible for conducting monitoring on preserves and easements for ecological and compliance purposes, managing land protection and stewardship databases and providing team coordination and support. The Coordinator will supervise and coordinate a group of seasonal staff focused on stewardship activities and will serve as a point of contact for the Land and Water Protection program, including fielding internal and external inquiries and screening potential projects. The Land and Water Conservation Coordinator will ensure collection of accurate monitoring and research data in the field, including use of GPS and GIS software; implementation of property management plans, assembling and analyzing data; producing maps and reports; and completion of other activities aimed to build program and community support. This position may assist with maintaining preserve infrastructure, tools, and equipment, including vehicles.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Supervises seasonal staff working on projects in a wide geographic area, with responsibility for training, development, quality control and conflict resolution.
- Implements collection of ecological monitoring data in the field.
- Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, and negotiating and contracting with vendors.
- Interacts and build effective relationships with diverse groups, including land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and accomplish conservation and stewardship goals.
- Coordinates with Conservation, Science and Outreach staff to ensure consistent stewardship of preserves and easements.
- Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
- Maintains records related to land and water transactions, including quarterly land transaction financial verification
- Schedules and provides administrative support for team meetings and retreats
- Responds to internal and external requests for project information
- Responds to all cold call inquires for the team.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Travel within Colorado; evening and weekend hours.
- Experience managing staff or volunteers.
- Relationship building skills to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., media, government officials, internal scientists.
- Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
- Experience in training.
- Valid driver's license and good driving record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3-5 years’ experience in natural resource management, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability and willingness to apply the best available scientific research to decision-making and guide activities.
- Knowledge of ecological land management principles.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, natural resource preservation, and ecological monitoring.
- Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities.
- Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to drive 4-wheel drive vehicles or pickup trucks on two track and rough roads in remote locations.
- Experience collecting data in the field, including using GPS and GIS, analyzing data, and producing reports.
- Experience using applications such as Microsoft Office Suite software and Web browsers.
