The Conservation Project Manager (CPM) leads and manages a suite of complex and/or cross-functional conservation projects in support of the Colorado Business Unit’s strategic plan goals.  The CPM uses expert project management tools and strategies to support the design and implementation of high priority projects; to manage the tracking of the Business Unit’s overall conservation project portfolio; and to consult with colleagues on conservation project design and management as needed. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Conservation Project Manager (CPM) will work collaboratively with a strategic set of complex and/or cross-functional project teams to establish project goals, develop project plans and facilitate project implementation in a way that produces quality conservation deliverables on-time and within budget.  The CPM will use both conservation and project management knowledge to guide project teams in developing innovative solutions, navigating conflict resolution, engaging and communicating with stakeholders, resolving barriers, and maintaining progress toward outcomes.  The CPM will be a key contact with project sponsors and will help facilitate effective communication between the project team and key audiences within the Business Unit. The CPM will further support the Business Unit by developing and managing a clear and accessible system for tracking key information and progress on the Business Unit’s entire conservation project portfolio.  The CPM will act as a resource to other staff and project managers as appropriate to provide project management guidance, training and expertise.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • The geographic scope of the Conservation Project Manager’s work will be largely within the State of Colorado but may include multi-state, regional and /or national collaborations, partnerships and projects.
  • Coordinate the work of complex, cross-functional and/or interdisciplinary project teams toward the delivery of identified conservation outcomes.
  • Use expert project management tools and strategies, including the Conservancy’s Highly Effective Teams approach, to lead teams through project definition, development of project team structure, scope and work plans, timely and effective project implementation and delivery of outcomes on time and within budget.
  • Serve as key point of contact between project team and project sponsor and facilitate effective communication between team and other key internal and external audiences.
  • Assist project teams with developing solutions, resolving conflicts, communicating with stakeholders and maintaining progress toward outcomes.
  • Interact effectively as needed with conservation, science, communications, government relations, operations, philanthropy and legal staff.
  • Develop and manage a clear and accessible on-line system for tracking key information and progress on the BU’s entire conservation project portfolio.
  • Serve as a resource to other staff and project managers to provide project management guidance, training and expertise.
  • Make frequent independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context with consideration to varied perspectives.
  • May manage or participate in complex negotiations.
  • May be responsible for garnering public and private funds to support project goals.
  • May supervise one or more administrative or professional staff, including training and professional development
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
A combination of education and experience equivalent to a BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
  • Experience designing and managing multiple projects toward on-time and on-budget delivery of results.
  • Experience in team leadership , including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance of cross-functional staff / participants.
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.
  • Experience with negotiation.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 5-7 years’ experience leading projects and/or teams or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Preference given for conservation-related experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of currents tools and practices in project management.
  • Certification in project management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence without authority.
  • Understanding of adaptive management and ability to create flexibility and responsiveness in project teams.
  • Excellent communication skills including ability to communicate clearly and effectively via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to facilitate, listen, negotiate, influence, and persuade.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a diversity of individuals and organizations.
  • Knowledge of current conservation issues and challenges in Colorado and the West.
  • Experience supervising staff, interns and/or volunteers.
  • Experience with public and/or private fundraising.
  • Experience with contract tracking and management.
  • Politically savvy.
