The Colorado Land Steward is responsible for the management and stewardship of conservation easements and preserves with a focus on the southwestern and southern parts of the state. This position will focus on land management, restoration, monitoring and compliance. The position will be located in Boulder, Colorado.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Colorado Land Steward provides technical leadership and support to the Colorado Land and Water Protection team by planning and implementing conservation easement and preserve management, stewardship and compliance work to meet strategic goals and legal obligations. The Colorado Land Steward monitors conservation easements and preserves and addresses compliance issues in collaboration with asset management, legal, finance and science staff. The Colorado Land Steward ensures consistent recordkeeping and training standards and leads trainings for monitoring staff.  The Colorado Land Steward coordinates all aspects of The Nature Conservancy’s stewardship of Medano Zapata Ranch Preserve, including working with public agency partners, lessees, contractors, and other staff to develop and implement land and facility management activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Responsible for all aspects of conservation easement and preserve stewardship.
  • Builds and maintains strong landowner and partner relationships.
  • Understands and interprets complex legal documents such as conservation easements, leases, contracts, and other stewardship agreements.
  • Maintains records related to land interests, monitoring, and compliance issues for conservation easements and preserves.
  • Gains cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development.   
  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.            
  • Under minimal supervision, makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently within Colorado.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
A combination of education and experience equivalent to a BA/BS, law or business degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation or related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements.  
  • Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Browsers.   
  • Experience with communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of Colorado conservation community and experience in public agency relations.
  • Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, and natural resource preservation.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Conflict resolution experience.
  • Politically savvy and experienced in developing partnerships (partners, community, government).
  • Experience in training and curriculum design.
