As a regional director for the National Geographic Society, your primary responsibility will be to ensure that NGS increases its overall impact in the education space within your region. You will oversee disbursement of funds and identify resources for strategic oversight of goals in your region to support the brand, value and overall impact of the National Geographic Society in your region. Region five consists of VA, WV, MD, DE, DC, PA, NY, NJ, CT, MA, RI, VT, NH, ME. Travel is required throughout the region and additional travel will also be required throughout the United States.
Additionally, you will direct activities reflecting the needs and opportunities in your multi-state area and align current and future programs of NGS with unmet needs and new opportunities. In so doing, you will develop relationships with civic, business and educational leaders as well as potential delivery partners. Primarily, the work will focus on the educational mission of the National Geographic Society to empower students and educators to understand the world for a healthier and more sustainable future.
The Regional Director of Region 5 must be a resident of Massachusetts.
- Program Strategy: Create program strategy for your region, including goals and outcomes, and lead the process from ideation through execution. Deliver multi-year plans using a 360 approach that incorporates overall National Geographic priorities. Build strategic partnerships at the regional and state levels. Make independent decisions and act at the NGS representative in each state in your region. Develop and implement creative ideas to improve impact of education programs in your region. Help integrate and align program themes in support of divisional and institutional strategic objectives. (30%)
- Program Development & Management: Design, implement, and direct large and active regional/state-based outreach programs aligned to the mission and goals of the National Geographic Society. Monitor state and regional education trends that will impact the development of strategies for National Geographic’s program development efforts. Create and oversee regional budgets made up of multiple sources. Work with appropriate partners at the regional and state levels to maximize impact of National Geographic programs for educators. Oversee contractors and trained/certified educators to execute on-the-ground programs in the states in your region. Ensure that programs meet their stated outcomes within the defined timeframe, and track impact data to report back to National Geographic. (30%)
- Communications, and Partnerships: Identify, cultivate and maintain productive, ongoing relationships with high-impact communities and partners that will help increase reach and impact of education programs in your region. This includes creating close connections with the National Geographic staff, explorers, grantees and educators at the state and regional level. Also includes building relationships with external organizations, and groups affiliated with the National Geographic brand—e.g. National Geographic Partners, Cengage Learning, as well as other communities or organizations that could support and amplify the mission of the National Geographic Society. Minimum Type and Years of Experience
- 10+ years in leadership, administration, strategy development, strategic networking and high level project management. 3+ years of prior staff management experience preferred
Skills and Knowledge Required
- Excellent leadership and organizational skills; self-direction and motivation; sensitivity to deadline-driven workflow; strategic planning, ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously with changing priorities in a dynamic environment. Stellar written, verbal, and digital communication skills; collaborative, team-oriented work style. Strong research and accounting skills. Knowledge of digital and print media production and publication. Proficiency in Office suite; familiarity with content management and customer relations management systems, database design and management, web analytics tools, technology proficiency and project management tools a plus.
