Under the supervision of the Senior Vice President of Operations, this position is responsible for providing Association-wide leadership for the development and implementation of strategic and operational initiatives in all facets of the Aquatics Departments at all YMCA of Greater Boston Branches.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Oversee and manage all areas of aquatic programming including, but not limited to: safety around water program, instructional swim lessons, water fitness and competitive swimming.
  • Researches and reports on the latest trends and developments in aquatic programming and safety. Continually develop and implement aquatic safety standards in keeping with current safety trends.
  • Develop and implement program standards with and through the program Cabinet which ensure quality service delivery.
  • Develop and implement strategies to build capacity and drive participation in Aquatics programming.
  • Develop and implement strategies to build capacity and recruit and train Aquatics staff team members.
  • Provide leadership to aquatic safety initiatives and ensure compliance by performing regular audits.
  • Oversee creation and implementation of in-service trainings for Swim Instructors and Lifeguards.
  • Develop and implement annual all staff in-services for Lifeguards and Instructors.
  • Manage and track branch certifications reports, including in-service attendance.
  • Lead regular Aquatic Cabinet meetings in coordination with SVP
  • Audit training team leaders for quality on an annual basis
  • Works closely with Program Managers and Coordinators to provide technical expertise and coaching or develop plans for improvement or changes as needed.
  • Coordinate a training team for all aspects of Aquatics certifications while ensuring a sufficient number of offerings in each area to meet association needs.
  • Work to develop the next generation of Aquatic leadership through proactive staff development plans.
  • Assist Branch Executive Director and Operations Director in the hiring process of Aquatics leadership positions.
  • In conjunction with Cabinet direction oversee selection and assist in ordering equipment for lifeguarding, swim lessons and all other aquatics programs. 
Educational Background: 
Master’s Degree preferred from an accredited college or university
Skills/Experience: 
  • At Least 21 years of age with YMCA Lifeguarding Trainer Certification. If Red Cross certified, the employee must cross over to YMCA certification within six months of hire.
  • At least 5 years experience in instruction and management of a wide variety of Aquatics programs and pool maintenance.

Essential Functions

  • Experience supervising staff and developing pool schedules and class schedules, as well as good member and staff relation skills.
  • Must be aware of the YMCA Movement and trends in the aquatic field and must continue to enhance his/her knowledge in YMCA Aquatic Management and certifications.

Required Certifications

  • Current certification as YMCA Team Leader; Multi-Team/Org Leader preferred
  • Current Trainer level certifications in YMCA Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Oxygen Administration; Faculty preferred
  • Hold Trainer level certification in YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor (YSL V6); Faculty preferred
  • Hold Trainer level certification in YMCA Facilitation Skills; Faculty Preferred
  • Optional: Leading and Coaching Others, POOL or equivalent
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $68,000.00 - $78,000.00
