This AmeriCorps position serves with The Nature Conservancy and Earthwatch over an 11-month period to advance our work in improving private and public lands by providing outreach and education strategies by coordinating volunteers to help provide outreach to local communities and provide environmental education experiences. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

 

The Education and Outreach Coordinator implements community outreach and educational strategies that effectively communicate Earthwatch’s and The Nature Conservancy’s conservation messages and promote our conservation and community-involvement efforts. 

  • Assists in developing educational program content and/or curricula;
  • May produce publications, materials to promote and increase public awareness (not fundraising);
  • Establishes and develops collaborative relationships with local schools, universities, state/local agencies and corporations that are involved in environmental education to promote, expand and implement Earthwatch’s educational initiatives;
  • Recruit, train and manage community volunteers to assist in development of community outreach programs for youth environmental programs and workforce development education programs;
  • Manage the coordination and logistics of planning, execution and impact of various environmental outreach programs;
  • Perform administrative functions as required and within the scope of the grant.
  • Travel to and from projects, meetings, and events that are essential to the service of this position
  • Scheduling and coordinating logistics for special events and/or meetings;
  • Coordinate project with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing a timeline;
  • May assist in the development of program materials and correspondence;
  • Make day-to-day decisions within the scope of service assignments;
  • Recruit, manage, train and retain volunteers to serve alongside Earthwatch staff and at Earthwatch events
  • Review and implement Earthwatch policies and procedures regarding volunteer programs including training staff
  • Communicate conservation efforts being implemented such as forest thinning, prescribed fire, and invasive plant control to stakeholders, partners, and the general public.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Coordinate projects and set priorities
  • Adapt or modify processes in response to changing circumstances
  • Interpret guidelines & analyze information
  • Duties are performed under direct supervision and established guidelines, with opportunity to act independently on some tasks
  • Demonstrate common sense, flexibility and teamwork with ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Write, edit & proofread written materials for use with project development and presentation
  • Coordinate with vendors/other parties to execute projects/deliverables
  • Willingness and ability to travel within the geography assigned
  • Financial responsibility may include purchasing, processing invoices, contracting with vendors, and assisting with budget tracking
  • Identify routine problems and utilize existing resources for resolution, referring difficult questions and problems to supervisor
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or GED, some college and conservation experience desirable
Skills/Experience: 
  • U.S. Citizen, U.S. National or Lawful Permanent Resident
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Satisfy the National Service Criminal History check eligibility criteria
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with MS Office
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues
  • Commitment to complete 11 months as AmeriCorps member
  • Good organizational skills and ability to manage diverse activities to meet deadlines

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated
  • Post-Secondary Education preferred
  • Interest in the mission and activities of The Nature Conservancy and Earthwatch
  • Database skills, including managing and tracking data, and producing reports;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience in public speaking experience and/or education
  • Experience in business writing and/or editing publications or related materials
  • Knowledge of City of Boston, MA
  • Knowledge of sustainability and city resilience
