POSITION: Accounting Manager
REPORTS TO: Chief Financial Officer
START DATE: As soon as possible
DURATION: Full time, year round, exempt position
LOCATION: TIOBEC Administrative Offices, Seaport District, Boston MA
The Accounting Manager reports to the CFO and will be an essential thought partner to the CFO. As the organization commits its focus and attention to the importance of a data driven culture, the Accounting Manager will work closely with the CFO to evaluate and implement systems intended to benefit the organization’s financial and reporting goals.
Although the primary role will be responsibility for the overall maintenance of the accounting system, the individual will be active in the ongoing reporting, budgeting and forecasting requirements especially critical for a not for profit organization, and will be charged with maintaining strict accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate reporting.
The position oversees and is responsible for the effective operations of the main accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll functions and participates in the banking and cash management duties. There is supervision of any additional accounting staff employed during busy periods of the year.
- Primarily responsible for the overall maintenance of the accounting system, including all functions and general ledger account reconciliations required to produce month-end and annual financial statements for department leadership and organization officers and directors
- Assist with ongoing reporting, budgeting and forecasting requirements especially critical for a not for profit organization, and provide guidance to the CFO for areas of improvement or utilization
- Responsible for maintaining and establishing accounting principles, best practices and procedures to ensure accurate reporting and compliance
- Develop and manage financial controls in accordance with the company’s procedures
- Monitor the financial performance of the company, and help to establish and communicate financial metrics to senior management team
- Capable of performing detailed financial analysis including financial modeling, profitability analysis, return on investment and impact to bottom line
- Work closely with the CFO and provide assistance and leadership with the year-end audit support
- Oversees and manages the department’s operations of the accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll functions and participates in the banking and cash management duties
- Supervise and manage a seasonal accounting staff during busy periods during the year
- Help to promote and enhance the finance department’s capabilities to partner with each organizational department
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field and four years of professional accounting experience.
- Nonprofit experience is strongly preferred. Knowledge of Not for Profit accounting principles, theory and practices is essential.
- Experience with accounting systems (QuickBooks-Nonprofit).
- Superior proficiency of Microsoft Office suite products, especially Excel.
- Strong analytical and data analysis background and experience
- Knowledge of sales billing, revenue recognition, and sales tax procedures.
- Knowledge of accounts payable and receivable procedures and practices.
- Experience with payroll processing applications (ADP Workforce Now).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, a strong work ethic, and demonstrated teamwork skills.
- Ability to function independently and effectively in a self-directed environment.
- Prior supervisory experience is preferred
- Passion for the nonprofit mission of Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Ctr.
