Responsible for the daily operations of the Harbor Montessori School & Child Enrichment Center. This position will focus on supporting curriculum and instruction following a Montessori approach, building relationships in the community, increasing enrollment in all program areas, supervising staff, managing department budget, and the development and integration of family programs and services offered at the YMCA.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serve as a champion for the Montessori approach.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to teachers as needed.
  • Interview and hire new staff as the need arises.
  • Directly supervise the classroom teachers, sign off on time cards, make sure they have the annual required amount of training for licensing standards, and evaluate them on an annual basis.
  • Develop the monthly staff schedule within the parameters of the budget and for licensing needs.
  • Work with DHS, Maine Roads to Quality, the Midcoast Resource Development Center and other collaborative community partners.
  • Maintain and keep up-to-date children’s records such as immunization records, change of status reports, accident reports, weekly rosters for the Center, end of the month USDA program reports, etc.
  • Develop and be responsible for the Childcare budget.
  • Manage the overall maintenance of the Center. When items needed to be repaired or replaced, work directly with the Director of Facilities.
  • Recruit, tour and register new children to the Center.
  • Hold monthly staff meetings.
  • Plan and implement family events at the Center.
  • Support fundraising events as part of the overall YMCA.
  • Speak with the children in ways that are respectful of their emotions, in voices that invite children to listen and not feel overpowered, and in words that send clear and consistent messages.
  • Be aware of where children in your care are at all times and make decisions based on their safety and well-being.
  • Work with other team members to maintain daily record keeping such as attendance, meal counts, cleaning and safety checks.
  • Build appropriate communication systems with children’s parents and honor their role as primary caregiver/teacher in their child’s life.
  • Demonstrate verbally and by role modeling a sound knowledge of excellent caregiving practices.
  • Build healthy adult working relationships with team members.
  • Always respect parents’ and families’ right to privacy and confidentiality.
  • Attend parent and/or staff evening functions.
  • Purchase program supplies.
  • Obtain the minimum hours of training (30) each year for staff working more than 20 hours a week and (18) for staff who work less than 20 hours a week to keep teaching qualifications within state licensing requirements.
Educational Background: 
A Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education along with both 3 years direct childcare experience as well as supervisory experience OR
BA/BS in a related field with 18 credit hours in Early Childhood Education, 3 years direct childcare experience as well as supervisory experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • This teaching administrator position requires deep understanding of child development, teaching, and caregiving best practice as well as supervisory experience.
  • Harbor Montessori School & Child Enrichment Center Director shall be at least twenty-one(21) years of age.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary; $38,000.00 - $45,000.00
