The Director of the NASCA operating unit is the overall responsible for implementation of The Nature Conservancy’s conservation efforts in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador (Costa Rica and Panama as project countries). Facilitates and oversees TNC´s conservation, policy, fundraising and team-building in coordination with Conservation Managers in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador and works with partners to achieve our conservation goals in Costa Rica and Panama.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • He/she will coordinate with Conservation Managers contacts to government agencies, multilateral organizations, companies andother conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador (Costa Rica and Panama as project countries).
  • He/she will work with the four regional strategy teams—Freshwater, Lands, Infrastructure and Marine—and country Conservation Managers to implement a specific, actionable business plan and to contribute to the organization’s goals in Latin America.
  • He/she will coordinate with Conservancy’s Global Priorities groups to ensure that our work is adequately leveraged and represented in international policy and donor events.
  • He/she will play a leading role in engaging donor support both for the NASCA. Unit itself and for Latin America Conservation Programs’ work as needed.
  • He/she negotiates or supports the negotiation of complex and innovative solutions with government agencies, companies, major institutions, and landowners related to conservation in the food sector in coordination with country Conservation Managers.
  • He/she will work with key Conservancy staff to coordinate, integrate and promote the Conservancy’s diverse projects in agriculture, ranching and fisheries, helping the organization leverage its field successes into new policy and corporate engagement tools that dramatically increase the scale of our influence and result in significant and measurable conservation results.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  •  Facilitate the development and implementation of cutting-edge conservation strategies to address challenges related to freshwater conservation, sustainable food production, deforestation and climate change, infrastructure development and preserving oceans, in coordination with country Conservation Managers.
  •  Work with the Conservancy’s Regional Leadership Team to develop and lead strategies to engage major international agencies, corporations and foundations that work on conservation issues in NASCA countries to mitigate negative impacts on biodiversity conservation and environmental services provisions. Identify and cultivate high leverage partnerships around conservation goals related to conservation in these countries in coordination with country Conservation Managers.
  •  In addition to leading the NASCA operating unit, he/she will focus 80% of his/her time on external engagement, management of board of trustees, management of key partners and donors, and raising funds to implement the unit’s strategy.
  •  In the first 6 months after hire, he/she will spent 80% of the time understanding the organization, strategies and manage internally.
  •  Lead efforts to improve coordination, communication and planning across Conservation Programs in NASCA. Is responsible for the overall reporting of progress for NASCA, coordination the flow of information from the team.
  •  Serve as a focal point for Latin America and Global engagement with internal and external parties to integrate Conservancy activities related to NASCA countries and ensure an adaptive, locally appropriate, coherent, unified approach commensurate with the potential threat in coordination with the country Conservation Managers.
  • Work directly with the Conservancy’s Trustee Advisory Councils for Colombia and Peru to maximize their participation in and contributions to the operating unit’s conservation, fundraising and policy efforts in coordination with country Conservation Managers.
  •  Requires frequent travel domestically and/or internationally, including evening and weekend hours
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 7 years of experience as a leader in the conservation arena, non-profit sector, advocacy, or related for-profit area.
Skills/Experience: 
  •  Management experience including leading and managing a large multi-disciplinary team.
  • Written and verbal fluency in English and Spanish is required.
  •  Superb communication and presentation skills required.
  •  Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex or multiple projects of strategic importance, including managing finances, supervising multidisciplinary professionals and coordinating the work of partners while meeting deadlines.
  •  Experience working with current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and geographic regions, especially Colombia, Peru and/or Ecuador.
  •  Experience communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences including donors, board members, employees, outside partners, or equivalent.
  •  Experience developing partnerships (partners, community, government).
  •  Experience in fundraising, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation, and budget management.
  •  Networking skills with high level conservation contacts.
  • Experience working with methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives.
  • Experience conceiving and implementing strategic and creative initiatives.
  •  Negotiation skills

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi- lingual and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated.
  •  Masters Degree, 12-15 years of experience in directive position and more than 5 in conservation practice will be appreciated
  •  Experience developing and structuring Organizations (financial, team, procedures).
  •  Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs. 
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical in other relevant languages than english
  • Politically savvy.
