The Associate Director of Public Institutions (ADOPI) for the Latin America Division of The Nature Conservancy designs, implements and coordinates effective multi-year strategies and plans for public donor agencies, and is responsible for securing financial resources to support the conservation goals of the division. The ADOPI reports to the LAR Director of Government Relations. Preferred location is Bogota, Colombia – potential location Mexico D.F.
The Associate Director of Public Institutions is responsible for building a portfolio of qualified donors and developing relationships. S/he understands and applies principles of engaging public donors and developing public donor strategies. S/he will be responsible for cultivating public donor interest in TNC’s work and developing opportunities and proposals to fund the needs for conservation priorities in Latin America. The ADOPI provides opportunities for donors to receive recognition and increase future funding. S/he involves appropriate partners in the field and in the US, as well as staff in TNC’s Global, Latin America Regional, and In-Country Offices, keeping them apprised of interactions, issues and concerns, and directs questions as appropriate. S/he is capable of featuring the programs of the Conservancy in broad terms. The ADOPI will be required to use the Conservancy’s donor database and will participate in the development of proposals.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Build and manage a portfolio of public donors, coordinating among TNC offices.
- Responsible for visits and proposals annually. Annual fundraising goal of $5.000.000 or more.
- Act independently and in supervisor’s stead as needed, exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
- Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
- Works with TNC’s Legal and Grants staff to ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements.
- Financial responsibility includes working within a budget and meeting fundraising objectives.
- Manage and implement assigned projects, coordinating the work of peers and setting deadlines.
- May manage or participate in complex or sensitive negotiations.
- May supervise support or administrative staff.
- Persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups who are important to the organization’s overall prosperity.
- Travel frequently and on short notice, work long and flexible hours as needed.
- Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 5 years related experience or an equivalent combination.
- Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents.
- Experience in applying for and securing public funding.
- Experience in managing and tracking prospects and donors.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams.
- Experience, coursework, or other training in fundraising principles and practices.
- Fluency in Spanish and English.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Skills or fluency in Portuguese.
- Ability to implement and manage fundraising plans, including individualized cultivation, solicitation and recognition plans.
- Ability to determine an institutions’ interests, capacity and potential for helping the Conservancy meet its goals, and act appropriately to tie those interests with the Conservancy’s work.
- Knowledge of current conservation and development priorities of public institutions.
- Extensive experience interacting with Public Institutions as an employee of a public institution (especially World Bank, Global Environmental Facility, Interamerican Development Bank, or one of the implementing or accredited agencies of these institutions), through relationship management of public institutions, or as a manager of a project funded by a public agency.
- Demonstrated experience using listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate donors.
- Proven ability to negotiate high profile or sensitive agreements.
- Superb communication and presentation skills; ability to persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups.
- Works effectively in high-tension situations and maintains composure under pressure. Diffuses high-tension situations comfortably.
- Commands attention, can change tactics midstream, and manage group processes during presentations or discussions.
- Demonstrated ability to develop constructive and effective working relationships inside and outside the organization.
- International experience is a plus. Ability to design, implement and direct multiple projects, setting deadlines and ensuring program accountability.
