Block Island Preserve Caretaker is responsible for the maintenance of all TNC owned and managed trails and facilities on Block Island. The Caretaker assists the Block Island Program staff with the tasks associated with biological and property monitoring, habitat restoration, and efforts to expand a volunteer program for land management. The Preserve Caretaker works closely with the entire Block Island Program staff and is directly supervised by the Associate State Director. This is a full-time year-round position with benefits.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Maintain all TNC owned and managed trails and facilities
  • Work with Block Island Program staff to devise and implement a plan of trail and facilities improvements
  • Erect and maintain fencing to protect rare and endangered species and signage to educate the public on preserves, refuge lands, and beaches
  • Working with Block Island Program staff, assist with biological and property monitoring
  • Assist Block Island Program staff with efforts towards scientific studies, habitat restoration and educational programs
  • Work with Block Island Program staff to lead and expand volunteer program in areas of land management
  • Other duties as may need to be assigned

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • May interact with visitors
  • May supervise volunteers, interns, or temporary staff
  • Works under close or infrequent supervision
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances             
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience             
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, brush blade, weed wacker, or similar equipment)
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to obtain a driver’s license, and maintain a good driving record
  • Ability to deal with the general public in a friendly, outgoing and professional manner
  • Knowledge of Block Island community essential
  • Basic carpentry and painting skills essential
  • Mechanical skills preferred
  • Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management preferred
