The Education & Stewardship Assistant is responsible for assisting the Block Island Program: in leading summer nature walks, staffing the visitor center, trail maintenance and other stewardship activities, overseeing volunteers; performing office duties; assisting in scientific activities and biological monitoring.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Education & Stewardship Assistant is directly supervised by the Associate State Director. This is a 12-week position beginning on June 11, 2018 through August 31, 2018.  There are four paid full-time positions (35 hrs. per week), short-term. Housing may be available.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Lead nature walks and tours as assigned to educate the public about local natural history, conservation heritage, and The Nature Conservancy's mission on Block Island. (25%)
  • Staffing the BI Conservancy visitor center. (30%)
  • Perform trail maintenance, invasive plant removal, and monitor preserves for appropriate use. (25%)
  • Assist in orientation, training, and guidance of volunteers and youth groups. (5%)
  • Assist with biological and legal monitoring and other scientific activities on Nature Conservancy preserves. (5%)
  • Clean and maintain Nature Conservancy facilities, including the Ocean View Pavilion, and other duties as assigned. (10%)
  • Ability to work long hours, including weekends.    
  • Work requires physical exertion and/or muscular strain.                                                                           
  • Work involves several disagreeable elements and/or exposure to job hazard’s where there is some possibility of injury.
Educational Background: 
HS Diploma and 1 year experience. 
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience organizing files.                                                   
  • Experience operating power and construction tools in a safe manner.
  • Experience in Customer Service.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to deal with the general public in a friendly, outgoing & professional manner; knowledge of Block Island community preferred.
  • Knowledge of natural sciences, ornithology and/or botany skills.
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
  • Obtain related licenses or certifications such as first aid, CPR, driver’s license.
  • Proven leadership abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to complete tasks within assigned timeframes, possibly in the absence of supervision.
