This position leads the philanthropic efforts of YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly. The Vice President of Advancement serves as a member of the President/CEO’s Strategic Team, providing leadership to achieve short and long-term goals through annual giving, foundation and government grants and capital campaigns. This position will work in close collaboration with staff colleagues, conference partners and volunteer leaders in positioning YMCA Blue Ridge as a “charity of choice” for the investment of donations and in implementing the financial development strategy to elevate the Assembly’s impactful work.

This senior leader provides leadership to the Assembly’s board, staff and volunteer leadership to ensure the Assembly has a strong culture of philanthropy to provide charitable resources to abundantly support youth programs, provide financial assistance, enable innovation and allow for continued improvement of our campus and facilities.

Areas of Responsibility: 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create strategy and direct planning for both annual and capital campaign initiatives including case for support, volunteer recruitment and annual calendar.
  • Actively involved in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects.
  • Prepares and coordinates proposals for grants from government sources and private foundations by working with staff and volunteers to identify, cultivate and receive public and private grants to support existing and new program initiatives.
  • Develop compelling gift proposals, acknowledgements, reports and other communications. 
  • Implement and monitor strategies for advancing current and potential donors through all aspects of the gift cycle.
  • Directly lead and coach the development assistant and communications team (currently three people).
  • Give leadership to the alumni relations program.
  • Provide leadership to ensure all donors are informed and recognized. Oversees tracking of all gifts and pledges by source and purpose and provides reports as needed.
  • Maintain an active list of donor prospects for personal cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Serve a staff liaison to the Advancement Committee and other assigned committees of the Board of Directors; coach members of the Advancement Committee and Board on their role in development efforts. Develops strategies to increase volunteer involvement at all levels of financial development.
  • Organize and attend member gatherings and special events.
  • Overnight travel will be required a minimum of 30 nights per year.
  • Work closely with the Group Sales/Engagement and Mission Impact departments to develop and direct the marketing, communication and stewardship plans.
  • Plan and oversee the association annual meeting, annual reports, newsletters, brochures and reports.
  • Direct financial development budget.
  • Serve as a contributing member of the Strategic Team working closely with the CEO to fully integrate all aspects of the positions accountabilities with the vision and strategic direction.
  • Provides training in fund raising.  Educates, motivates and provides feedback to individuals related to best practices in the fundraising process.
  • Represents the association as required by the President.
  • Must meet acceptable criminal background check standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Annually provide a minimum of 10 presentations to Partner YMCA Boards and staff leaders.
  • Annual campaign support to achieve 7% of budgeted income.
  • Minimum of 95% of campaign pledges are collected.
  • A donor retention rate of 80% is maintained with a minimum of 40% increasing in individual giving.
  • Major Gifts ($1000 or more) account for 60% of annual contributions.
  • Alumni giving increases a minimum of 2% annually.
  • Develop the foundation needed for a $4-$6 million dollar capital campaign to be launched in 2020.
  • A robust list of potential donors, with an active process of cultivation is in place.
  • Support the CEO to secure one million dollars to endowment fund with a growth of 25 new White Columns Society members.
  • Develops communication plans to insure donors, participants, and the regional community understand the case for support.
  • Ensure the strategies and messages for positioning YMCA Blue Ridge are cohesive and always point to YMCA Blue Ridge’s mission, purpose and vision.
  • Personally support the fundraising campaigns of the Assembly.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Five or more years of experience in a financial development capacity or a director leadership role at the YMCA, and some type of prior connection/experience to YMCA Blue Ridge is preferred.
  • Experience with fundraising, donor relations and project management is required. CFRE preferred.
  • Proven ability to work with top level volunteers and major funding partners
  • High level of computer proficiency, including all standard business software. Proficiency with database management software, experience with Bloomerang software is beneficial.
  • Professional image, strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present in front of large groups and interact with and motivate donors. 
  • Ability to recognize and maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented and adaptable with proven experience in meeting deadlines while managing multiple projects. Must demonstrate sound judgment, initiative and creative thinking.
  • Adept at working independently or collaborating within a supportive, fast-paced team environment.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Commensurate with experience. Benefits include retirement contribution (12% paid by the YMCA), vacation plan, health plan, and other benefits per personnel policy included.
