Membership Sales Director

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Membership Sales Director is responsible for the implementation of ongoing membership strategies and activities both internally and externally. The position provides direction, measurement and accountability to branch membership sales, retention and growth. This position will implement the mission, vision and values of the YMCA of Greater Birmingham in the areas of sales and prospect management.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Membership Acquisition

  • Meet annual budgeted targets for new member acquisition for designated Y.
  • Develop membership acquisition tactics to ensure achievement of branch goals including campaign initiatives, sales initiatives, and corporate partner cultivation and management.
  • Track and report productivity including prospect work, membership inquiries (by telephone and in person), appointments for tours and closing ratios for designated branch and region/community.
  • Oversee planning, development, management and reporting of the annual Membership budget; implement plans for growth and take appropriate action to correct variances.
  • Collaborate with association membership, operations and marketing teams.

Member Engagement & Retention

  • Be part of a team that creates a member-focused culture and models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  • Foster a climate of innovation and resolves problems to ensure members satisfaction.
  • Build relationships with and among members, respond to inquiries and solve problems.
  • Localize and implement members outreach and relationship development strategies to increase member engagement, retention and minimize attrition.

Corporate Membership and Community Partnerships

  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Represents and promotes the YMCA of Greater Birmingham within the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses and governmental entities.
  • Communicate the benefits and impact of the Y’s work so that the Y is known as a leading charitable, cause driven organization.

Staff Development

  • Hire, motivate and retain a committed team of passionate employees.
  • Provide leadership to staff responsible for carrying out the organizational, program and operational strategies of the association’s strategic plan.
  • Provide support to recruitment, training, development and evaluation of membership sales staff, ensuring staff members are qualified and positioned to deliver a high level of engagement toward acquisition and program conversion.
  • Develop strategies to motivate and care for staff by seeking opportunities to recognize staff and show appreciation.
  • Ensure adherence to all YMCA policies and procedures regarding the safety, health and welfare of members, program participants, guests and staff.
  • Serve as part of the branch’s management team.
  • Open to flexible schedule that includes evening and weekend Manager on Duty shifts.
  • Attends all staff meetings and required training programs.
  • Other duties and responsibilities assigned by supervisor.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 2-4 years of experience in direct sales, marketing or customer service essential with proven results in revenue growth.
  • Minimum 2-4 years of supervisory experience in customer/member service.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, mentor and develop staff to create sales oriented team and deliver exceptional service.
  • Experience with a focus on new member acquisition, prospecting, marketing, analytics and service.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Possess excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with all levels of management, employees, volunteers, and members.
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail.
  • Successful completion of background and Child Abuse and Neglect screening.
  • Acquire and maintain the following certifications within 30 days of start date via YMCA, American Red Cross, American Heart Association and American Health and Safety Institute (ASHI):
    • First Aid/CPR/AED (valid 2 years unless otherwise noted.
  • Requisite Redwoods Online Training Modules (completed prior to start date and repeated annually).
