The Salem YMCA is seeking aleader with a background in aquatics to manage the operations of our Aquatics Department. The Aquatics Director is responsible for all aspects of the instructional and recreational aquatics experience. Located in the heart of downtown Salem, the Salem YMCA provides over 150 swim lessons to youth weekly, offers aqua activities for all ages, and is host to a local High School Swim Team. Key responsibilities of this role includerecruiting, retaining and transitioning swimmers of all ages and abilities through the programs and working collaboratively with the competitive team to achieve a successful conversion rate of instructional swimmers to the competitive program. Through strong leadership, efficient planning, high quality engagement, and direct service, the Aquatics Director manages staff, provides guidance on the technical and physical skills of swimming, creates an environment of fun that develops relationships, achievement and belonging while fostering a lifelong love of swimming and the water. The incumbent in this role will enjoy connecting with participants and visitors of all ages, have the ability to carry out Aquatics initiatives that meet the goals of the organization, and have a strong skill set in planning and leading others.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Create an excellent participant experience by leading quality programs and services, including but not limited to, aquatics classes, aquatic open times, vacation programs, and special events.
  • Provide support for and direct leadership of outdoor pools and guards.
  • Lead aquatic staff through onboarding and appropriate training. Ensuring records of staff certifications are up-to-date and complete.
  • Ensure optimal program availability, safety, cleanliness and consistent, clear communication to members, participants and staff. Implement association curriculum providing progression to the aquatics program.
  • Prepare systems to delivery high-quality engagement aquatics programming.
  • Remain up to date regarding aquatics trends national Y as well as emerging YMCA trends within aquatic programming and advocate for the expansion of Y programs and services aligned with those trends.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree or commensurate work experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 21 years of age with 3-5 years experience as a competitive coach, preferably in a leadership capacity.
  • At least one year of staff supervision experience including one evaluative cycle and demonstrated ability to positively develop and support exceptional performance.
  • Current USA Swimming and or YMCA Swim coach credentials. Certified Pool Operator CPO, CPR, AED, Basic First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 3 months.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency of swim skills in accordance with YMCA standards and have a strong foundation in stroke mechanics.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to relate to individuals and families from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Enthusiastic presence and ability to appropriately encourage and guide youth and adults to reach their goals.
