The Water Security Strategy Advisor Europe will be responsible for driving The Nature Conservancy’s engagement with the European water utility sector to advance our global water funds strategy at scale, find innovative mechanisms to address water scarcity, and mainstream natural infrastructure investment and transform water management to benefit nature and people across the globe. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • The Water Security Strategy Advisor Europe is responsible for driving The Nature Conservancy’s engagement and strategy with the water sector in Europe. S/he will develop and maintain strong relationships with keystone stakeholders within the utility sector to bring our solutions to the forefront of the sustainable development conversation. S/he will remain apprised of changes in the utility sector including new technologies, policies, players, and financial mechanisms that are applicable to our Water Security strategy. S/he will support fundraising efforts for the strategy, from both public and private actors principally in Europe.
  • S/he will build relationships across the organization, especially within regions where s/he is unfamiliar with the water utility environment or market.  S/he will develop specific recommendations for the Global Water Security Managing Director and Europe Managing Director to validate, enhance or change the Global Theory of Change as it relates to investment in the water utility sector and Europe’s role within it.
  • S/he will work closely with European leadership and colleagues to ensure a unified and coordinate approach to European entities.  S/he will advise and collaborate with Global Water team staff to progress our Theory of Change and inform our global science agenda. This position will report to the Europe Regional Managing Director with a dotted line reporting to global Water Security Managing Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Drives The Nature Conservancy’s engagement and strategy with the water sector in Europe.
  • Develops productive, working relationships with new partners in Europe in support of the global water security strategy and open doors to new sector investors and utility sector relationships important in priority regions that TNC has identified for biodiversity conservation and water security.
  • Supports fundraising efforts for the strategy, from both public and private actors principally in Europe
  • Designs, implements and directs complex and diverse projects, setting deadlines and ensuring program accountability.
  • Makes strategic decisions based on analysis, experience and judgment.
  • Incorporates cross disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives.                                                                   
  • Coordinates the work of other professionals, inside and outside of the organization.   
  • Significant latitude to deal directly with field management personnel and organizational leadership.
  • Requires willingness and ability to travel up to 50% and to work occasional weekends and evenings.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Resource Management or related and 7 years of related experience
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • or equivalent combination in a private sector environment such as a utility company, private sector suppliers and operators, engineering, management consulting and/or investment banking. including management experience.
  • Experience managing to outcomes within a matrix organization
  • Expertise from the water industry and/or water utility sector, and specific insight regarding investment and business development in the sector. 
  • General understanding of the varying role water utilities play within the political and governance structure of a country, with specific experience in Europe.
  • General understanding of the role that natural infrastructure can play in delivering cost-effective solutions for water security
  • Experience leading and managing complex projects and strategic initiatives in an unstructured environment.
  • Proven analytical and project management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Experience developing end products with software such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, cloud and web based tools including SharePoint, WebEx/conferencing software, Skype, Google Hangouts, and DropBox.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Self-starter with ability to generate work plans with limited support in line with the overall Europe strategy and Global water Security team outcomes, goals, strategies, and plans.
  • Experience developing business plans or major strategy assessments, particularly with conservation forms of valuation, deal structuring, negotiations support, financial modeling and analysis, business planning.
  • Fluency in language other than English (e.g. German, French Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese).
  • Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental and international affairs.
