The Sustainable Restoration Specialist develops, manages and advances conservation, ecological and restoration projects, plans and methods on large-scale geographic areas. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Sustainable Restoration Specialist will coordinate and execute the implementation of the Mantiqueira Conservative Plan in Minas Gerais state and support the implementation of Belo Horizonte Water Fund, through negotiation with rural landowners, local, state and federal representatives and authorities, academy and other partners involved in the Plan, especially Environmental Department of Extrema municipality; and provide strategic technical support for the implementation of Belo Horizonte Water Fund.

This may include one or more of the following functions:

To Mantiqueira:

  • Establish the Conservancy as a major conservation partner within the area of responsibility
  • Develop key partnerships with public and private organizations to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices
  • Engage local community for local conservation efforts
  • Negotiate complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect natural vegetation
  • Develop and implement conservation strategies
  • Monitor project implementation and write progress reports

To Belo Horizonte Water Fund:

  • Follow up implementation of Cooperation Agreements
  • Monitor the drafting of Paraopeba’s Watershed Water Resources Plan
  • Provide technical support on engagement process and fundraising for the Water Fund development
  • Help to define required studies to Water Fund design and implementation, to develop their terms of reference, and contribute to reports’ evaluation.
  • Participate in strategic meetings of decision-making instances and for stakeholders’ engagement

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • May manage multi-disciplinary administrative and professional staff, with responsibility for performance management, training and career development. 
  • Make arrangements and cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.        
  • Ensure program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
  • Design forest restoration diagnostics and projects.
  • Provide technical trainings of restoration issues for assorted actors.
  • Take independent decisions under minimal supervision, based on analysis, experience and context
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Provide technical support the implementation of Green Blue Water Coalition - Belo Horizonte Water Fund to establish projects with multiple actors, such as local NGOs, municipalities, educational and research institutions, Paraopeba and Velhas Watershed Committees, rural landowners, farmers and Government.
  • Representing TNC in meetings and events focused in Vegetation Restoration;
  • Ensuring compliance with the TNC's internal rules.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS, Biology, Agronomy or Forester and experience in restoring degraded areas, natural resource management or related; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience in negotiating complex agreements. 
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience in communicating with assorted audiences and/or media both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, and Web Browsers.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION 

  • Experience with principles of Agroforestry Systems and Natural Vegetation Restoration.          
  • Experience in training and capacity building in forest restoration themes.
  • Completely knowledge about Brazilian Forest Laws;
  • knowledge about several restoration techniques, and Payment for Ecosystem Services schemes, especially in Minas Gerais State;
  • Post-Graduation or Specialization in biology, forestry, agricultural or economics is appreciated.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Knowledge of land management restoration practice and conservation science.
  • Ability to explain conservation/ restoration and environmental practices to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, and natural resource preservation.
  • Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
