Whatcom Family YMCA is seeking a full time Aquatic Director that is able to grow with our organization as we increase our presence in the community. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Aquatic Director develops, organizes and implements high quality, member-focused YMCA aquatic programs. Additionally, they will oversee the operation of the aquatics department and programs, including staff supervision, budget management and planning for all age categories under the policies, standards, and procedures established by the Board of Directors, committees, and management staff.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Direct and supervise program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives.
  • Establish new program activities and expand programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations, including offsite facilities and programs.
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule and direct personnel and volunteers as needed. Review and evaluate staff performance. Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensure records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Monitor daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  • Secure and schedule pool facilities. Maintain accurate records of pool chemical levels.
  • Conduct lifeguarding, swim instruction, monthly in-service, YMCA Summer Adventure and Ys Kids Camp staff training, First Aid and CPR trainings.
  • Create, schedule and coordinate swim classes, water fitness classes, child care swimming, other YMCA programs, pool rentals and swim team practices and meets.
  • Provide supervision, oversight and support for the Y swim team program.
  • Perform lifeguard and swim instructor duties as needed.
  • Assist in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Develop and monitor program budgets to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Actively participate in the Annual Campaign and special activities.
  • Model relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions and respond to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • Assists with program committee meetings
  • Compile program statistics. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in program.
  • Serve as a member of the Y management team and support the overall objectives of the Whatcom Family YMCA.
Educational Background: 
Must possess a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent education/experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of proven successful related experience.
  • The successful candidate should have a positive history of leadership in the areas of staff development, volunteer recruitment and fiscal budgeting. Must be able to communicate effectively and above-average organizational skills required.
  • The proven ability to establish and maintain favorable relationships with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Proven ability to take initiative and leadership roles, good judgment and ability to make decisions independently.
  • Exceptional listening skills.
  • Proven organizational skills, effective time management and project completion discipline.

Certifications/Trainings Required:

  • Must obtain within 30 days of employment and then maintain current certifications in CPR/AED Basic Life Support, First Aid and Oxygen Administration.
  • YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor and YMCA Lifeguard certification and/or certification by a nationally recognized provider required.
  • YMCA Trainer and/or Faculty certifications preferred.
  • Certified Pool Operator certification preferred.
  • Maintain other required certifications as stated in the training matrix.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $37,000.00 - $45,000.00
