NRDC is seeking a China Wildlife Analyst to work with the Land & Wildlife Program and the China Program in our Beijing office.
This Analyst works closely with the Wildlife team to develop strategies and project plans to advance wildlife conservation efforts within China, the United States, and internationally, with a focus on China. The Analyst works with U.S., Chinese, and international partners to push for increased Chinese leadership in global wildlife conservation, particularly as it relates to the species imperiled by the international wildlife trade. The Analyst works with both China and U.S.-based team members and reports to the China Wildlife Conservation Director and the Director of the China Program’s Environmental Law Project.
- Develop expertise on China’s wildlife laws, regulations, and practices and identify opportunities to enhance Chinese leadership in these areas;
- Meet regularly with U.S., Chinese, and international officials to provide NRDC’s perspective on wildlife trade issues and, ideally, develop joint efforts to conserve wildlife;
- Advocate in furtherance of NRDC’s wildlife trade goals with government officials, scientists, and others from various countries at international meetings such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES);
- Develop and write reports for NRDC analyzing Chinese law, policies, and practices concerning wildlife;
- Help organize and attend relevant meetings, symposia, and conferences;
- Help convene NGOs working on wildlife trade in China and build NRDC partnerships and collaborations with such NGOs; and
- Develop fact sheets, blogs, and other materials on wildlife trade in Chinese and translate documents from Chinese to English and from English to Chinese, as needed.
- Other related duties assigned by the team.
- minimum 3-5 years of relevant work experience;
- Knowledge of wildlife conservation, particularly wildlife trade and trafficking issues;
- Ability to research and recommend solutions to conservation problems;
- Experience working with Chinese government agencies;
- Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders (government, research institutes, other NGOs, industry);
- Bi-lingual in Chinese and English, with excellent English oral and written skills;
- Excellent public speaking skills; and
- Ability to work independently and as part of the Wildlife Trade Initiative team, with flexibility in taking international calls at odd hours.
