Under the supervision of the Associate Executive Director and/or the Program Development Director, the Aquatics Director will provide supervision and leadership to all areas related to the Aquatics Department.  This position includes the planning, developing, administrating, expanding and evaluating all programs and services offered by the Aquatics Department along with overseeing and grooming Aquatics Staff. A strong focus on safety and risk management is necessary.  This position typically requires 10 hours each week in the areas of life guarding or teaching classes hands on.  In addition, the position helps oversee several municipal outdoor facilities such as Horicon, Fox Lake, Waupun, Lomira and Beaver Dam.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Be knowledgeable in YMCA Emergency Procedures.
  • Plans, develops and executes programming and scheduling for the YMCA Aquaticss Department.  This can include summer school swim programs, Bea Bonner Begin to Swim program, formal preschool swim lessons, rental groups, special events and special groups (schools, Boy/Girl Scout groups, church groups). Aggressively seeks other Aquatics opportunities they may benefit the YMCA.
  • Oversee all Aquatics staff. Schedule, train, evaluate, and conduct mandatory meetings for staff teaching water exercise classes-communicate with them on a regular basis discussing class sizes, schedules and trainings and equipment needs.  Hire, schedule, train, conduct, evaluate, and conduct monthly mandatory meetings with all Lifeguard Staff.  Hire, schedule, train, evaluate, and conduct mandatory meetings for staff teaching swim lessons-communicate with them on a regular basis discussing class sizes, schedules and trainings and equipment needs.  Conduct thorough new staff orientations.
  • Available to work 1-2 evenings per week and periodic weekends oversee lessons and/or open swim parties.
  • Hold bi-weekly or monthly staff in service trainings.
  • Responsible for safe operation of the Aquaticss programs, including compliance with state health codes and insurance regulations.  Keep diligent, organized records of the pools, staff certifications, etc…
  • Responsible for preparing and keeping up to code for the Aquatics and Y facility BBP kits, First Aid Supplies and EAPS.
  • Participates and provides on-going training and access to certifications to assure highest standards in staffing and safety.  Works closely with American Red Cross, West Bend Insurance and the YMCA to provide appropriate training.   This position is responsible for hands on instruction of all CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguard Training.  Also responsible for documentation of all trainings and certifications.
  • Prepares and administers Aquatics budget.  Produces payroll sheets and budget corrective action sheets.
  • Prepares and evaluates swim lesson and pool schedule each session to ensure that the pool is utilized effectively. Work with outside groups to schedule their activities without conflicting with the YMCA. Such as Special Olympics, Boys and Girls High School Swim Team, Juneau Rec, etc…
  • In collaboration with other Directors and the Marketing Associate, develop, write and execute all marketing and promotional information materials related to Aquaticss to include print and radio PSAs.
  • Participates in special events throughout the year as needed.   Serves as lead staff person for the Aquatics portion of sports camp, and other Aquatics events throughout the year. Work closely with the Child Care, Y Care and Club Wannago Staff to provide special programming and open swim times.
  • Serves as a staff liaison for the Annual Campaign.
  • This position also adapts to the summer Aquatics schedule, which includes Horicon, Fox Lake, Waupun Lomira and Beaver Dam. Recruit, hire, and train all outdoor pool staff, keeping certifications current and scheduling mandatory in services at the respective pools with the Program Development Director.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Educational Background: 
Prefer degree in Recreation, P.E. or a related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Possess current First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED Training, Lifeguard Training, and W.S.I certification, or the ability to attain within 30 days of hire.
  • Required to have experience in organizing, conducting, supervising, and evaluating performance of assigned programs and staff.
  • Aquatics Facility Operator or Certified Pool Operator, Lifeguard Training Instructor, CPR & AED for the professional and community, Fundamentals of YMCA Swim Lessons, Youth/Adult Instructor, Parent/Child & Preschool Instructor are required or the ability to attain within one year of hire.
  • Experience supervising staff, budget administration, leading committees, and ability to work independently.
  • Good verbal and written skills are required.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $30,000.00 - $35,000.00
