This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Sports & Wellness Director has overall responsibility for the development, oversight and daily operations of the sports and health & wellness departments and provides leadership and supervision to the following programs: youth and adult sports leagues, clinics, and camps, fitness floor operations, personal training, group exercise and wellness programs. The Director will provide excellent customer service to members, guests and program participants in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
- Promote and strengthen the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA’s focus areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living & Social Responsibility
- Serves as a member of the CEO’s Senior Leadership Team
- Directs and supervises program activities to meet YMCA objectives
- Expands sports and wellness programs in accordance with community needs and strategic/operating plans
- Supervises and provides feedback, coaching, guidance for all Sports & Wellness Department staff, interns, co-ops, contract employees and volunteers
- Leads with empathy using excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Able to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
- Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations
- Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events
- Responds to all member, guest, participant, parent, and community inquiries and concerns in a timely manner
- Compiles program statistics, monitors and evaluates the effectiveness and participation of programs and makes adjustments as needed
- Conducts pilot sessions to support the launching of programs and activities
- Represents the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA in a professional manner serving as a role model and advocate of the Y’s core values
- Effectively creates and manages budgets
- Ensures upkeep of sports and wellness facilities and equipment is maintained
- Keeps abreast of the sports and fitness industries through self-study, research, conferences and visits to other facilities
The Sports & Wellness Director will provide oversight and be ultimately responsible to ensure that both the Sports and Health & Wellness departments accomplish the following:
Sports Department
- Secures and schedules athletic fields and facilities. Transports and sets up equipment for games and practices; monitors and purchases necessary sporting equipment as budget permits
- Creates teams from paid and financially assisted registrations. Organizes and conducts parent orientation meetings, and training and meetings for coaches
- Develops and distributes team practice and game schedules; trains and schedules sports officials; develops and distributes sports rules, guidelines and handbooks
- Purchases and distributes team uniforms and awards; coordinates and distributes team photographs
- Organizes and conducts sports clinics
- Assists in the marketing and distribution of sports program information, may organize and schedule program registrations
Health & Wellness Department
- Design and implement group exercise programming to best serve our membership demographic, making format or instructor changes when needed
- Actively recruit new, fresh group exercise instructors to continually infuse innovation into the schedule while maintaining a growth in program services and high percentage of returning participants
- Create, develop and maintain Personal Training systems and evidence based programs that meet or exceed revenue goals with quality staff who regularly help members achieve their health & wellness goals in a noncompetitive, non-intimidating manner
- Tracks staff certifications and ensures timely recertification is completed as needed
- Assists in the marketing and distribution of wellness program information
- Three to five years of related experience in a leadership role preferred
- Experience creating, implementing and evaluating health & wellness and sports programs preferred
- Willing and able to work some early morning, evening, and weekend hours as needed
- Previous YMCA experience preferred
- Successful completion of background check required
- AED/CPR/First Aid certified or able to obtain within 30 days of hire
