The Altamaha Stewardship Coordinator performs and participates in stewardship operations on both TNC preserves and partner lands in conjunction with state, federal, and non-profit partners. Work includes the maintenance, management, development and coordination of conservation programs with an emphasis on prescribed fire.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Altamaha Stewardship Coordinator leads work teams comprised of both TNC and external partner employees to ensure the coordination, community support and implementation of management plans on protected lands. The Altamaha Stewardship Coordinator maintains and manages partner relationships, contracts, and preserve areas frequented by the visiting public, removes exotic species and/or monitors and researches species, maintains tools and equipment, operates heavy machinery, and opens and closes preserve to the visiting public.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • May lead or monitor work groups consisting of TNC staff, partner staff, interns, and volunteers covering a wide geographic area.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and fundraising targets.
  • Networks with diverse groups, including land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy programs/preserves.
  • May work under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1-year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience in the management of natural systems, particularly longleaf pine.
  • Must meet NWCG qualifications for Firefighter Type 1, including coursework and experience requirements. See the Conservancy’s Fire Management Manual for a full explanation of qualification requirements: http://www.tncfiremanual.org/BurnBoss.htm .
  • Experience operating and or repairing various types of equipment and machinery.
  • Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Browsers.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with and coordinating work with external partners, volunteers or entry level staff.
  • Experience using ArcGIS.
  • Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities, including an ecologically appropriate fire regime.
  • Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation/conservation or similar field.
  • Relationship building and negotiation skills.
  • Communication skills via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
