Experience Corps is an evidence-based, award-winning AARP Foundation literacy program, utilizing highly trained volunteers age 50 and over to mentor students in kindergarten through third grade. The program improves the literacy rates of children, enriches the lives of our volunteers and strengthens schools in the communities we serve.

This position is responsible for planning, organizing, and supporting the volunteer corps associated with AARP Foundation Experience Corps’ program in Baltimore. As part of a larger program team, each Volunteer Engagement Specialist is responsible for 100+ volunteers. The Volunteer Engagement Specialist oversees program implementation, Team Leaders, and implementation of member trainings.  S/He communicates with the schools regarding concerns and using problem solving skills and helps to ensure positive working relationships and satisfying experiences for all parties involved in the AARP Foundation Experience Corps program.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Oversees program implementation in assigned Baltimore schools
  • Oversees Team Leaders in each school.
  • Support implementation of member trainings.
  • Coordinate additional in-service trainings to build members’ skills.
  • Ability to process large volumes of information and make informed decisions in a fast paced environment
  • Oversee mid-year and end-of-year reviews for members and conduct with Team Leaders.
  • Document member and teacher concerns and work with Academic Tutoring and Mentoring Partner to identify and implement solutions in a timely manner.
  • Ensure the completion of assessments from teachers, and member satisfaction survey.
  • Communicate changes in member needs at assigned schools to Academic Tutoring and Mentoring Partner.
  • Implement annual in-school orientations for teachers and staff at all participating schools.
  • Communicate and ensure adherence to program guidelines, standards, and reporting requirements.
  • Ensure timesheets and other written and online data are accurately collected and documented in a timely manner.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with schools’, principals, and teachers
  • Ensure a productive and satisfying experience for AARP Foundation Experience Corps members and schools.
  • Participate in assigning members to schools and classrooms.
  • Support schools in implementing special projects, e.g., Literacy events.
  • Support schools in implementing special community outreach projects.
  • Communicate regularly with Academic Tutoring and Mentoring Partner about issues that could have an impact on the program’s quality and/or reputation.
  • Participate in program, office, and Network team meetings.
  • Perform other duties as needed to support the mission of AARP Foundation Experience Corps.
  • Demonstrate Leadership Behaviors in all interactions.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Communications, Education, or similar field of study
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 3 years of successful work experience in high-volume volunteer corps management or a related field; education field and low-income community experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing to a diverse range of people.
  • Planning and organizational skills with calm demeanor while working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain strong working relationships with a variety of people and groups.
  • Background in volunteer management, communication, conflict resolution, customer service, or working in a school environment.
  • Working knowledge of a computer and database.
  • This position requires a criminal background check.
  • Must have reliable transportation; particularly for commuting to Baltimore area schools as well as the Baltimore Experience Corps office.
  • This position may require some occasional early evening outreach, estimated between 3PM-6PM
