Seasonal Summer Urban Naturalist Day Camp Assistant

Patterson Park Audubon Center seeks four part-time (10-20 hours/week for a total of 100 hours) Assistants to help plan, instruct, and document the Summer Urban Naturalists (SUN) day camp in Baltimore City. The SUN Assistants will be trained, then lead campers entering kindergarten through 5th grade in hands-on environmental activities utilizing 155-acre Patterson Park as an outdoor classroom. We seek enthusiastic individuals who will inspire others about the natural world.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Prepare materials and deliver instruction for elementary school-aged campers in Patterson Park. Evaluate and enhance curriculum content, materials, and procedures as needed.
  • Lead groups of approximately 15 campers in engaging, hands-on environmental activities, including stewardship projects, nature-themed games, both structured and unstructured nature play, and possibly an off-site field trip.
  • Create and edit a short video documenting Summer Urban Naturalist activities to be presented at the end of camp.
  • Maintain accurate records of program participation.
  • Serve as a role model naturalist and environmental steward.
  • Work closely with the Summer Camp Supervisor and Education Manager to assist with animal care and office duties as needed.
Skills/Experience: 

We seek creative and hardworking people dedicated to education and the environment, who possess the following skills and experiences:

  • One year’s experience working with children in an educational or informal setting preferred. One year experience may be achieved by combining time from multiple positions or roles (example: multiple summer or school year teaching experiences, babysitting, coaching, etc.)
  • Enjoy working with children from diverse backgrounds ranging in age from those entering Kindergarten to 5th grade.
  • Basic knowledge of Chesapeake Bay ecology and Baltimore City ecology, or eagerness to learn.
  • Basic knowledge of and commitment to conservation of birds, other wildlife, and their habitats, or eagerness to learn.
  • Demonstrated group management skills.
  • Energetic, flexible, self-motivated, organized, responsible, patient.
  • Ability to work as a team and also with minimal supervision.
  • Professional and friendly manner.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
  • Background check is required for those 18 years of age or older.
