Program Director, Swim & Fitness (The Druid Hill Y)

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Program Director (Swim & Fitness) is responsible for the direction, operation, and supervision of the pool, fitness center and all programming that falls under these areas, including the staffing, program development, budgeting, and general maintenance and upkeep. High member engagement and customer service skills are required with the skills necessary in accommodating the interests of many segments of the community in day-to-day operations of the facility. Day to day operations include associate supervision, fiscal control, program development, program area facility management/maintenance, program optimization and fulfillment, and volunteer development.  The Program Director is also responsible for hiring, training, supervising, and leading their associate team in superior levels of member service and engagement. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Directs and supervises Swim and Fitness program/services to meet the needs of the community and fulfill Y objectives. Establishes new program/services and expands program within the center in accordance with YCMD strategic and operating plans.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed within Swim and Fitness departments. Reviews and evaluates Associate performance. Develops strategies to motivate Associate and achieve goals. Ensures records of Associate certifications are current and complete.
  • Ability to perform all functions of those they supervise and maintain qualifications and certifications of Lifeguard II and Swim Instructor. Trainer level certifications in lifeguarding and swim instruction will be required within 120 days of employment.
  • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and Y health and safety regulations and maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  • Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings.
  • Creates and schedules swim lessons, all fitness classes (land/water) and pool rentals.
  • Develops, produces and distributes program information necessary to promote assigned programs in accordance with association marketing plans.
  • Effectively coordinates facility usage for assigned programs and activities.
  • Fosters an environment that is positive and motivating to children and peers.
  • Implements strategies that support recruitment of new participants and retention of existing participants. Ensure that fitness center orientations are conducted through FitQuest and ActiveLinx, developing individual fitness programs to maximize membership satisfaction and initiates new programs according to members expressed needs.
  • Maintains program data, reports and statistics for assigned programs for the purpose of tracking the intended outcomes as agreed upon.
  • Assures compliance with the Y in Central Maryland standards, and all Maryland State and local regulations. Ensures program standards are met and safety procedures are followed.
  • High member engagement and customer service skills are required with the skills necessary in accommodating the interests of many segments of the community in day-to-day operations of the facility.
  • Provides support for Association objectives including annual support campaign and volunteer committees/boards as assigned.
  • Attends and actively participates in Product Team Leadership meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  • Implements Association best practices and policies as it relates to operations including purchasing, payroll, reporting, business management, and record keeping.
  • Incorporates the four character values of the Y: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility and adhere to the Code of Conduct.

Educational Background: 
A Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation/Health Sciences or related field
Skills/Experience: 

The Program Director will meet the qualifications set forth by the Y in Central Maryland. Associate shall be of good character and reputation; capable of carrying out assigned responsibilities; capable of accepting training and supervision; and capable of communicating effectively both orally and in writing as applicable to the job responsibility.  Minimum qualifications include:

  • 2-5 years supervisory experience and 2 or more years in leadership of Swim and/or Fitness operations.
  • At least 21 years or older
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid, YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding (instructor level preferred). If Red Cross certified, must have YMCA Lifeguard Certification within 60 days of hire – the YCMD will provide crossover course.
  • Must obtain nationally recognized fitness certifications (i.e. ACE, NASM, ACSM, NSCA, NSPA) within 6 months of hire.
  • Required to have trainer certifications in CPR, AED, O2, Lifeguard Instructor and Swim Instructor within 120 days of hire.
  • Maintain all required certifications and ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
  • Excellent personal computer skills and experience with standard business software
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Y Team leader certification preferred, candidates will be required to complete Team Leader Certification within two year and Multi Team Leader within 3 year.
