The Y in Central Maryland is looking for a Preschool Lead Teacher in Towson, MD. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manages a classroom of approximately 20 students, providing an environment which fosters the social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and creative development of each child.
  • Plans and implements activities and assignments that are clear, well organized, and designed to meet long range learning objectives for students.
  • Maintains a clean and safe classroom environment that meets Y standards and OCC regulations.
  • Communicates with children, parents, and other staff members on a regular basis.
  • Participates in staff meetings, special events, parent-teacher conferences, and trainings as assigned.
  • Utilizing the assigned curriculum, the lead teacher will establish and implement weekly lesson plans and activities designed to meet curriculum goals and learning objectives.
  • Using classroom learning centers, equipment and materials, the lead teacher will engage children and introduce them to new concepts and experiences which encourage the mastery of new skills in the following domains:  language and literacy; math; science; emotional and social development; music; visual arts; physical development; and character development.
  • The lead teacher will measure student proficiency using various assessment methods and techniques; and identify and provide for children needing additional assistance.
  • Implements best practices in early childhood education, utilizes developmental checklists based on the Work Sampling System, and maintains classroom bulletin boards and learning centers as required to meet curriculum needs and MSDE accreditation standards.
  • Maintains a clean classroom environment by disinfecting toys, sweeping floors, wiping tables and chairs, wiping shelves and cubbies, putting toys and equipment away properly, cleaning common areas (kitchen, staff lounge, lobbies), and wiping bathrooms and sinks down as necessary.
  • Maintains a safe classroom by directly supervising children throughout the classroom environment – encouraging positive behaviors, knowing where each child is at all times updating the class attendance book, identifying potential hazards in the classroom, resolving conflicts within the classroom, and adhering to OCC regulations and Y policies.
  • Completes paperwork as assigned, including weekly lesson plans, Boo Boo notes, MyDay at the Y Forms, written observations and documentation, behavior reports, incident reports, and assessment results.
  • Greets every child and parent as they arrive into the classroom.
Educational Background: 
High School Diploma or GED
Skills/Experience: 
  • Ability to lift and carry children and other items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to participate in physical fitness activities with the students, including walking, running, jumping, dancing, and swimming; as well as organized games, including soccer, kickball, basketball, and relay races.
  • Ability to stand for at least 45 minutes in both cold and hot climates.
  • Ability to work under the supervision of the preschool director.
  • Ability to provide direction and feedback to classroom assistant.
  • Supervises a classroom of approximately 20 students.

Required Certifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must complete a physical examination with a negative TB test.
  • Must complete a criminal background check.
  • 90 Hour ECE Certificate or equivalent college coursework
  • One year full-time experience working in a preschool classroom
  • Must complete Basic Y Courses within first 90 days.
  • Must complete continuing education units as specified by the OCC on an annual basis.
