Under the direction of the Vice-President, the Executive Director will lead the operations of our largest family centers in Central Maryland. Ideal candidate will be results-oriented, excels at building teams, and experienced and tenured Y Leader to join our talented management team. Currently the center has 6,700 households (over 21,000 members); The Orokawa Y in Towson includes a two-pool indoor Aquatic venue with a competition pool and family pool. It also features basketball courts, a comprehensive cardiovascular and strength fitness center, functional training center, multiple group exercise and program studios, sports, rock climbing wall, and outdoor space.

The Y in Central Maryland ranks in the top 10 Membership Ys in North America, and is top 20 ranked by revenue. The Y in Central Maryland currently has a footprint that includes over 100 locations throughout central Maryland (11 Family Centers, 2 Swim Centers, 6 Preschools, 34 Head Start Sites, 10 Community School, 35 Summer Program locations, over 55 Before/After School sites). The Association recognize as a workplace of choice by several regional organizations, including Baltimore Magazine, and employs nearly 2,700 full-time and part-time Associates. The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Orokawa Y in Towson.  This position provides Cause-Driven leadership in staff supervision, volunteer management, fiscal management, financial development, membership and program administration, facility & equipment stewardship, community relations and personal-professional development.  The Executive Director is responsible for leading and growing a Family Center operation that includes a $6 million budget, Annual Giving Campaigns over $250,000, supervise senior leadership team 4 directors, and 6,700+ household membership units.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develops and supervises Orokawa Y Center operations
  • Implements Association membership strategies that support recruitment of new members and retention of existing members
  • Creates a member-focused culture and models relationship-building skills in all interactions
  • Fosters a climate of innovation and resolves problems to ensure member satisfaction
  • Identifies community trends and evaluates their impact on the Y’s programs and operations
  • Develops long-range plans for the expansion of programs and services, in harmony with overall Y objectives. Monitors the achievements of these objectives and exercises appropriate action to assure the achievements of the objectives are of the highest quality programs and services
  • Participates in and supports the Y Community Leadership Board and related committees as directed by the Vice-President
  • Provides leadership and is accountable for achieving annual support (Annual Giving) campaign and special events fundraising goals
  • Represents and promotes the Y in the local community by developing positive working and collaborative relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities
  • Effectively communicates the Y’s brand to establish the organization’s credibility within the community
  • Effectively represents the Y within in the community, developing strong relationships with local elected representatives and community leader organizations
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, and leads employees and volunteers in coordination with Association Human Resource Department. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Responsible for supervision of 4 exempt staff and 175+ non-exempt associates
  • Ensures safety, cleanliness and function of all related facilities and equipment
  • Ensures all program operations are consistent with association policies and procedures, including emergency, insurance, accident, purchasing, personnel, accounting and other administrative systems
  • Develops, manages, and monitors center-operating budgets to meet or exceed targets. Initiates and manages adjustments to the budget to assure a balanced operation and submits reports on current operations
  • Incorporates character development within the activities of the Y
  • Assists in all areas, project teams, and duties as assigned by supervisor
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services, Business Management, Business Administration or equivalent
Skills/Experience: 
  • Strong business operations background with a proven track record for producing growth and strong financial management
  • Five or more years of successful management experience in community based Health & Wellness, recreation, and programming field, preferably in a Y. Youth and family programming and aquatic supervision experience a plus.
  • Supervision of 3,000+ unit (unit defined as household) Y or related health and wellness center that provides services to all age groups.
  • Supervision of full and part time employees and accountability of annual budget exceeding $4.0 million
  • Proven record of leading and aligning teams to a clearly articulated vision, mission, and strategic plan, which advance a cohesive, positive, and productive culture
  • Ability to lead assigned operations including staff development and supervision, development and monitoring of budgets, membership and program development, financial development, marketing and public relations, board and volunteer development
  • Requires ability to exercise appropriate independent judgment, to assess facts and issues, and make non-routine decisions regarding day-to-day operational problems and issues
  • Requires effective team-building and team-leadership skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations
  • Y Organizational Leader or Multi-Team Leader certification preferred
